That means the number 10 is now available for newly acquired quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. On Monday, the 49ers traded a 2018 second-round pick for the former New England Patriots backup quarterback. The team officially announced the trade on Tuesday morning.
"Jimmy is a player we have researched extensively since Kyle and I joined the 49ers," general manager John Lynch said via a statement issued by the team. "I am extremely pleased this came together today and we all think it is a big win for our organization."
Garoppolo wore the number 10 on his Patriots jersey during his entire NFL career. In fact, he also wore the same number throughout his college career at Eastern Illinois and his time at Rolling Meadows High School.
