In the deal, San Francisco sent its 2018 second-round draft pick to New England in exchange for the quarterback.
Garoppolo must pass a physical for the trade to be executed. A press conference will be held on Tuesday to introduce Garoppolo to the media.
"We are thrilled for Jimmy to join the 49ers family," said 49ers general manager John Lynch via a statement issued by the team. "Jimmy is a player we have researched extensively since Kyle and I joined the 49ers. I am extremely pleased this came together today and we all think it is a big win for our organization. Albeit in limited game action, Jimmy has displayed the characteristics and traits that we believe are vital to being a successful quarterback in this league. He has had the rare opportunity to sit and learn from a future Hall of Fame quarterback in a championship atmosphere. We look forward to Jimmy joining the team tomorrow and hitting the ground running."
Garoppolo was originally selected by New England in the second round (62nd overall) of the 2014 draft. He has appeared in 17 games while starting two over his four seasons with New England. During that time, Garoppolo has completed 67-percent of his passes for 690 yards, five touchdowns, no interceptions, and a passer rating of 106.2.
Garoppolo is not expected to start Sunday's home game against the Arizona Cardinals, according to Joe Fann of 49ers Media, who had an opportunity to speak to Lynch regarding the trade.
News of the trade was first reported by Adam Schefter of ESPN.
