The 49ers have three full practices scheduled for this week before traveling to the Seattle area. Wednesday's practice was their first of the week.
Free safety Jimmie Ward continues to be limited in practice. He was inactive against the Panthers. Ward has been attempting to return from a hamstring injury that forced the 49ers to place him on the physically-unable-to-perform list at the start of training camp. He was activated off of the PUP list back on August 23 and has been trying to get back onto the football field since. He did not play during the preseason.
Last week, Ward was limited during practices as the 49ers prepared for the Panthers. While this week started off no differently, head coach Kyle Shanahan had hoped to get Ward more work as the team prepares for Seattle.
"He's still limited," Shanahan said on Wednesday. "He's going to get more today than he did last week. We're going to continue trying to up his reps. We'll see how that goes today. I expect him to be better this week than he was last week but he's definitely still limited and hope to have him on Sunday."
Two 49ers did not practice on Wednesday. They were linebacker Reuben Foster, who suffered a high-ankle sprain against Carolina and is expected to miss at least a few weeks, and tackle Joe Staley, whose absence was not injury related.
