Tom Pelissero of NFL Network is reporting that San Francisco 49ers guard Joshua Garnett will miss at least the first month of the season. The second-year player injured his knee during practice earlier this month and had surgery on August 10 to "clean out" the knee. However, Pelissero stated that there is no setback for Garnett.


The 49ers had been hopeful that Garnett might be available for their Week 1 regular season home game against the Carolina Panthers, but head coach Kyle Shanahan said that it would be "a battle" for him to return in that timeframe. Shanahan has previously stated that he does not believe the injury to be long-term but that Garnett's recovery would take "a little bit of time."


On Thursday, the 49ers traded for Detroit Lions offensive lineman Laken Tomlinson, who has experience playing the guard position and likely gives the team some flexibility.

The 49ers had hoped that Garnett could be a big contributor in 2017 but it looks like it will take some time to get him back into the lineup. He was the 28th overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft and started 11 games for the 49ers as a rookie last season.
