Tomlinson was selected out of Duke with the 28th overall pick by the Detroit Lions in the 2015 NFL Draft. Martin Mayhew, who is currently the senior personnel executive with the 49ers, was the general manager in Detroit when Tomlinson was selected.
Tomlinson has appeared in all 32 games of his NFL career, started 24, and made one postseason start. During his time at Duke, he started as a freshman and went on to start 52 games over his collegiate career. Tomlinson was a Consensus All-American in 2014 and the winner of the Anthony J. McKevlin Award, which is given to the AAC's athlete of the year, in 2015.
