While Ian Rapoport of NFL Network was the first to report the workouts with both Mathews and Jackson, it was Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area who first reported that the 49ers had worked out three defensive linemen on Tuesday.
Mathews entered the NFL as a seventh-round pick by the Indianapolis Colts in the 2010 NFL Draft. Following four seasons with the Colts, he spent two (2014-2015) with the San Diego Chargers before joining the Steelers in 2016.
In seven seasons in the NFL, Mathews has accumulated 108 tackles, five sacks, four passes defended, and two forced fumbles. He has started 20 games while appearing in 96 over his career. Mathews has appeared in all 16 regular season games four times in the past six seasons.
