San Francisco 49ers rookie wide receiver B.J. Johnson was dealing with a hamstring injury that he suffered during training camp. Following Monday's practice, head coach Kyle Shanahan did not yet know the extent of Johnson's injury. A few hours later, the team announced that the rookie was being waived.

In case you didn't remember, Johnson was the player who impressed the coaching staff enough during the 49ers' rookie minicamp in May that he made another high-profile undrafted free agent wide receiver, KD Cannon, expendable.


Johnson was originally signed by the 49ers as an undrafted free agent on May 8. He played college football at Georgia Southern. During his five-year career with the Eagles, Johnson played in 44 games, started 35, and registered 92 receptions for 1,377 yards and six touchdowns.

To take Johnson's spot on the roster, the 49ers claimed wide receiver Tim Patrick off of waivers from the Baltimore Ravens. Patrick was signed by Baltimore as an undrafted free agent on May 5. He played college football at Utah, where he appeared in 22 career games with 14 starts. As a senior in 2016, Patrick led the Utes in receptions (45), receiving yards (711) and touchdown receptions (5), while finishing ninth in the Pac-12 in receiving yards per game (59.2) and sixth in yards per reception (15.8).

During his time at Utah, Patrick had 61 receptions for 888 yards and five touchdowns. While he appeared briefly in one game in 2015, Patrick missed most of that season with an injury. He missed 17 games in his three seasons at Utah with injuries.
