San Francisco 49ers WR Pierre Garçon has been a main target so far in 49ers training camp. What were some of his takeaways from day 2?
The San Francisco 49ers signed wide receiver Pierre Garçon to a 5-year $47.5 million contract on March 9th, as the NFL's annual free agency period kicked off. The deal included $20 million in guarantees and came with a $12 million signing bonus. Garçon is able to earn $16.025 million in 2017.
Garçon has spent parts of his career with the Indianapolis Colts and the Washington Redskins. He played in a Super Bowl with Indianapolis in 2009-2010 and recorded 113 receptions with Washington in 2013. That may have been his best season, while last season Garçon finished with 79 receptions for 1,041 yards and three touchdowns, proving he can still be a threat in the passing game.
This year, Garçon is reuniting with 49ers new head coach Kyle Shanahan, with whom he spent time in Washington from 2011-2013. How are things going so far for Garçon? Today, 49ers.com reporter Joe Fann noted that Garçon, as well as tight end George Kittle, had an acrobatic catch in the team's second training camp session of the season. According to Fann, "Garçon went full extension near the right sideline." Tomorrow the team will put on pads for the first time.
Also, according to Fann, Garçon was a bit surprised by Brian Hoyer's arm talent, saying:
"I didn't know he could throw the ball that far. He loves to throw the deep ball."
Here is Fann's tweet:
Another 49ers.com reporter, Keiana Martin, shared her Top 4 Highlights from 49ers camp: July 28 that included this video of Hoyer threading Garçon the needle.
The 49ers brought in Garçon to be their no. 1 receiver and so far he is having a good camp.
Other tidbits:
Shanahan cleared up some injury news on wide receiver B.J. Johnson while promising an update for tomorrow on offensive lineman JP Flynn. Here is what Shanahan had to say when asked about the injuries:
"Yeah, that happened today. I'm not sure. It looked more like that, but I can't say for sure. I haven't talked to [vice president of medical services/head athletic trainer Jeff Ferguson] Ferg, but I'll have that for you guys tomorrow."
The 49ers will be hoping for minimal injuries going forward, as pads go on the players tomorrow and the real hitting will begin.
