Those folks in Las Vegas don't waste any time. Not long after the release of the 2017 NFL schedule, odds for the opening week of games were released by the Westgate Las Vegas SportsBook. The San Francisco 49ers open up the season at home against the Carolina Panthers and they are already listed as 4-point underdogs, per Nick Wagoner of ESPN.


The 49ers have not lost an opener since 2010 and have not lost a home opener since 2008. They have won four straight home openers, including the past two, both of which took place on Monday nights. Of course, the 49ers went on to get blown out during their Week 2 road contests in 2015 and 2016. Those games took place on short weeks when the 49ers were forced by the schedule-makers to fly across the country and face teams coming off of playoff appearances – one of which was the Panthers in 2016.


Traveling across the country after Week 1 won't be an issue in 2017. The 49ers will stay on the West Coast but still have to face a tough opponent. They will travel north to Seattle to play the defending NFC West Champion Seahawks.

The 2017 season will the first for Kyle Shanahan as a head coach. In February, he became the 49ers' third new head coach in as many years.
