Allen had surgeries on both shoulders during his college career, which led to mild arthritis. "Jonathan has really played without symptoms in his shoulders, and it's something that has not affected his performance or function," Alabama team doctor Lyle Cain told Rapoport at the NFL Scouting Combine. "It doesn't have to be treated during the season. And he's had a couple of great years."
The issues with Allen's shoulders did not prevent him from participating in drills at the combine. His numbers are listed below.
In 2016, Allen repeated as first-team All-SEC and won the Chuck Bednarik and Bronco Nagurski Award as the nation's top defender after compiling 69 tackles, with 16 for a loss, and 10.5 sacks. His sack total reached 12 in 2015.
Lance Zierlein of NFL Media had the following to say in his scouting report:
"Outstanding leader and athlete with an ability to rush the passer from outside or inside. Has produced against the run and pass thanks to his strength, agility, elite hand usage, and plus footwork. He might not be the cleanest fit inside as a full-time tackle for some teams, but his talent should trump any size concerns. Allen is a likely first-round selection with Pro Bowl potential down the road."
