Derrick Griffin was a dual-sport phenom at Texas Southern, playing both basketball and football. In late December, he decided to forgo basketball and prepare for the NFL Draft. The 6-foot-6, 248-pound wide receiver for the Tigers, who is listed as a tight end entering the draft, met with the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, per Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle.


Griffin decided to forgo the remainder of the basketball season in order to pursue his NFL career. "It was time for me to go," he said in December. "Too many signs. I've been waiting on it."


As a wide receiver, Griffin caught seven passes for 115 yards in 2016 before being dismissed in September for breaking team rules. In 2015, he recorded a team-high 36 receptions for 713 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Griffin was the SWAC Player of the Year last year in basketball. He was the only player in the SWAC to average a double-double in conference play with 13 points and 11 rebounds per game. This year, he was averaging a double-double again at 11.3 points and 10.9 rebounds per game before his dismissal.

Griffin could make an interesting late-round selection given his size. All that he is looking for is a chance from one NFL team. "It doesn't matter what team it is," Griffin said. "I get that shot, I'm going to run with it."
