Smith was signed by the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted free agent in 2012. In addition to the Buccaneers, he has spent time with the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills. In 2016, he suffered an ACL tear during the Buccaneers' first game of the season – a matchup against the Atlanta Falcons.
In the two seasons prior to his injury, Smith had 39 tackles, 13.5 sacks, three passes defended, and four forced fumbles. He was not a starter with the Buccaneers but was considered to be among the team's most effective pass-rushers.
Earlier this month, the Buccaneers placed an original-round tender on Smith. While the defensive lineman is a restricted free agent, he was undrafted. That means that a team like the 49ers could sign Smith without giving up draft compensation. He carries a salary of just under $1.8 million, according to Spotrac.com.
