Wilhoite originally signed with the 49ers in December of 2011 after going undrafted. He was waived by the team prior to the start of the next season but was re-signed to the practice squad. After 12 weeks, he was promoted to the active roster.
Through five seasons with the 49ers, Wilhoite has accumulated 268 tackles, 0.5 sacks, 10 passes defended, and three interceptions. He has played in 65 regular season games for San Francisco and started 36. 34 of those starts have come over the past three seasons.
In 2014, 16 of Wilhoite's starts came because of an injury to NaVorro Bowman that forced the All-Pro linebacker to miss the season. In 2015, Wilhoite started 12 games due to the retirements of linebackers Patrick Willis and Chris Borland.
Wilhoite was the 49ers' worst-graded linebacker and the second-worst graded defensive player (Glenn Dorsey was the worst) last season, according to Pro Football Focus.
