Draughn becomes just the second 49ers free agent to sign with another team. The other was kicker Phil Dawson, who signed a two-year, $6 million contract with the Arizona Cardinals.
Last season, Draughn had just 74 carries for 196 rushing yards and four touchdowns after signing a one-year deal to return to the team in March of 2016. He caught the ball 29 times for 263 yards and two touchdowns. Draughn started just one game last season – the team's finale against the Seattle Seahawks where he had a season-high 41 yards on 21 carries.
In 2015, Draughn had 273 yards on 78 carries with one touchdown for the 49ers. He also had 176 yards on 27 receptions. Draughn ended the 2015 season on injured reserve after suffering a knee injury during the 49ers' Week 15 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.
Draughn was originally signed by the 49ers in November of 2015 to help replace RB Carlos Hyde, whose play was limited due to a foot injury. After going undrafted in 2011, he spent time with the Washington Redskins (2011), Kansas City Chiefs (2011–2012), Baltimore Ravens (2013), Indianapolis Colts (2013), Chicago Bears (2014), San Diego Chargers (2014), and finally the Cleveland Browns (2014–2015) before being picked up by San Francisco.
In 2011, Draughn entered the league with Washington while current 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was the offensive coordinator there. However, he didn't make it on the final roster and was cut prior to the start of the season. Draughn and Shanahan briefly crossed paths again in 2014 when the running back was with Cleveland for less than a month while Shanahan was the offensive coordinator. While Draughn would remain with Cleveland for two seasons, Shanahan went on to be the offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons in 2015.
