La Canfora reports that the quarterback would prefer the Houston Texans, Kansas City Chiefs, or Denver Broncos. Those teams have a lot of other pieces in place and could be contenders with a veteran quarterback like Romo on their roster – assuming he can stay healthy for a season. Although, La Canfora reports that Chiefs general manager John Dorsey is very committed to Alex Smith as their starter in 2017, so that leaves Houston and Denver.
La Canfora has heard a couple of other team names that might be interested in Romo. "The other teams that I have heard are doing work on Romo, and where he could legitimately land, are the Rams and the 49ers," writes La Canfora. "I'm not sure any other suitors make sense."
With Colin Kaepernick opting out of the final year of his contract, the 49ers are left without a quarterback on their roster. Names like Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins and New England Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo have been linked to the 49ers as trade possibilities. However, Washington used the exclusive franchise tag on Cousins so acquiring him would not only be costly as far as salary is concerned, but costly in what the 49ers would have to give up in draft picks to get him. It had been reported that New England was not going to part ways with Garoppolo, but news from Friday morning indicates that they may be willing to reconsider that for the right price.
"If you made me guess, I'd put my money on Houston," continued La Canfora. "The Texans could live with Brock Osweiler as the highest-paid backup in league history for a year."
Romo has spent his entire career with Dallas after signing with the team as an undrafted free agent in 2003. He has a career completion percentage of 65.3-percent and has thrown for 34,183 yards, 248 touchdowns, and 117 interceptions in regular season games over that timeframe. Injuries have plagued his career in recent years. A compression fracture to the L1 vertebra in his back during the Cowboys' third preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks forced Dallas to go with rookie Dak Prescott as last year's regular season starter. The Cowboys would go on to win 13 games and Prescott would win the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award and be selected to the Pro Bowl.
