While Shanahan was officially named the 49ers head coach on Monday, he remained in the Atlanta area to prepare for his move to the West Coast. Both he and Lynch received six-year deals with the 49ers and hope to be together for the foreseeable future. Shanahan is coming off of a devastating Super Bowl LI overtime loss to the New England Patriots. He has spent the past two seasons as the offensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons.
"As a young man, I had the unique benefit of being exposed to the storied history of the San Francisco 49ers firsthand," Shanahan said Monday via a statement issued by the 49ers. "From that exposure, I developed great respect for those who created a world-class, championship standard. As this team begins the task of reestablishing that standard, I could not ask for a better partner than John Lynch. He is a man who certainly has personal knowledge of what championship organizations look like. John and I look forward to establishing a strong culture that will serve as our foundation for constructing this team.
"I am very excited to dedicate myself to the process that lies ahead. The first step in that process is identifying talented individuals who love the game of football as much as John and I do – coaches, players and staff. We are looking for individuals who work hard and are dedicated to doing things the right way, always in the best interest of the team. Most importantly, we want to give our fans a team they can be proud of on and off the field."
"One thing that Kyle and I agreed to when we did this – it was going to be a true partnership," Lynch said Tuesday on 95.7 The Game. "We've got to be lockstep. Our contracts are really playing towards that in terms of there's a lot of things where we split the control right down -- we won't get into those details but this just really is, in every way, a true partnership and we've got to see eye to eye and the only way to do that is just to go through the film and say, 'Okay, what is it that you're looking for at this position? What is it that you're looking for at this position?' I can then convey that to my scouts so that you really have a great idea of when you go out on the road, here's what we're looking for. When we're watching these guys on film, here's what we're looking for. And that will carry on through when Kyle sets his staff. There's going to be a great synergy between coaching staff and management and I think that's critical for success."
