Since Peters would not be getting full control of the roster, Broncos general manager John Elway had the power to block the request to interview Peters, but chose not to do so. Peters was well respected within the Broncos organization and considered to be a potential general manager candidate for some NFL team in the near future.
Prior to his previous role with Denver, Peters was the club's assistant director of college scouting from 2014 until 2015 following three years as a national scout and two seasons scouting the Western region for the Broncos. During his time in the NFL, he has been part of three Super Bowls.
"In his first seven years with Denver, Peters helped the team acquire 27 players through the draft and college free agency that were members of the Super Bowl 50 championship roster," says the official Broncos website.
There has also been talk that former Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik would join the 49ers front office in some capacity.
Because of Lynch's lack of front office experience, the 49ers will try to surround the first-time general manager and former NFL safety with as much quality talent as possible. It has already been reported that assistant general manager Tom Gamble would be retained at least through the draft in April, giving himself an opportunity to prove himself to Lynch.
