McVay was interviewed by the San Francisco 49ers on Monday for their vacant head coaching job. The hiring leaves just the 49ers and the now-Los Angeles Chargers as the only teams without a head coach following the 2016 season.
The hiring leaves New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan as the front-runners for the 49ers' job. The 49ers' patience during the search suggests that the team is zeroing in on one of these two. Both are currently on teams that had bye weeks during the playoffs and the 49ers may even have to wait until after the Super Bowl should their top choice, whoever that might be, make it that far.
Numerous reports have suggested that McDaniels is the 49ers' top choice for head coach. He interviewed with the team on Saturday and San Francisco is reportedly his preferred destination as well.

The 49ers also interviewed former Buffalo Bills interim head coach Anthony Lynn. However, the Bills have hired Sean McDermott, the former Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator, to be their new head coach. The 49ers also have a meeting scheduled for Sunday with Seattle Seahawks assistant head coach and offensive line coach Tom Cable.
Sean McVay is the grandson of former New York Giants coach and 49ers general manager John McVay. He had been the offensive coordinator with Washington since 2014. Before that, he served as the tight ends coach and assistant tight ends coach with the team. McVay began his NFL coaching career in 2008 as an offensive assistant with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He guided a Washington offense that was ranked third in total offense and second in passing in 2016.
The 49ers fired head coach Chip Kelly following the team's home finale against the Seahawks. San Francisco is also without a general manager following the dismissal of Trent Baalke.
