Joseph has spent the past two days meeting with the Broncos and was to meet with the 49ers if he left without a deal. He had served as the defensive coordinator in Miami for just one season. Prior to that, he served as a defensive backs coach for the Cincinnati Bengals, Houston Texans, and the 49ers under both Mike Nolan and Mike Singletary.
Joseph has run the Miami defense all season while head coach Adam Gase, a 2015 candidate for the 49ers' head coach job, ran the offense. That defense has ranked 18th in points allowed, 29th in yards allowed, 15th in passing yards allowed, and 30th in rushing yards allowed.
As far as head coach candidates go, the 49ers have met with New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, Buffalo Bills interim head coach Anthony Lynn, Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, Washington Redskins offensive coordinator Sean McVay, and Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott.
Seattle Seahawks assistant head coach and offensive line coach Tom Cable remains as the only known head coach candidate that the 49ers have not yet met with.
