"[Torrey Smith is] in the concussion protocol," 49ers head coach Chip Kelly said this morning while addressing the media. Smith suffered a concussion on December 11 against the New York Jets and missed the team's game this past Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons.
"I'm feeling way better but there's still some issues there," Smith said on KNBR 680 this morning. He said that he has not yet passed the tests necessary to move on from the concussion protocol and would not commit to playing on Saturday.
"I take the test (again) later this week," Smith said. "So we'll see." The 49ers only have two games remaining on their schedule. After playing the Rams, the team will host the Seattle Seahawks at Levi's Stadium in their season finale.
The 49ers are also without WR Quinton Patton, who broke his foot on Sunday against the Falcons. He, along with LB Nick Bellore, TE Blake Bell, and CB Jimmie Ward, was placed on injured reserve this week.
OT Joe Staley, who has been dealing with a hamstring issue, did not practice. Staley has missed the 49ers' last two games. This morning, Kelly was asked why Staley is not on injured reserve. "Because there's a hope that Joe can continue to play this year," Kelly answered.
