"Ray-Ray had a strong offseason and was off to a good start in 2016 prior to being sidelined for the season due to injury," said general manager Trent Baalke in a statement released by the team. "He has continued to work hard in his rehab and is a young player with a bright future in front of him. We look forward to his continued development and contributions, both on and off the field."
Armstrong suffered a pectoral tear during the second half of the 49ers' Week 2 loss to the Carolina Panthers and was placed on injured reserve on September 20. He arrived in San Francisco after the 49ers claimed him off of waivers from the Oakland Raiders in November of 2015. He was not selected in the 2013 NFL Draft, but was signed as an undrafted free agent by the then-St. Louis Rams.
In two game appearances this season, Armstrong had nine tackles, one fumble recovery, and the first interception of his career. He appeared in five games and recorded three special teams tackles last season with the 49ers. Throughout his four-year career, Armstrong has appeared in 48 games and started five. He has 56 tackles, one sack, one interception, one forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries during that time.
