This season, Kaepernick has played in eight games. Over the past two games, both losses against teams that had a combined five wins before facing the 49ers, he completed 16 of his 31 passes for 137 yards and a touchdown.
Of course, Kaepernick continues his protest of the national anthem. It's something that started in preseason and has been a focal point in the media all season. Some believe that the protest is even having an impact on NFL viewership ratings.
Modkins was asked how tough this year has been for Kaepernick, given his stance. "All I really see of Colin is that he comes into work every day and he's professional and he works his tail off and he's trying very hard to help our team win," Modkins said. "I'm not really worried of any of the social things that go on or anything that you might be talking about. I just know he comes in, he goes to work."
Kaepernick has also put his San Jose home up for sale and purchased a condominium in New York City this past offseason. Speaking on behalf of Kaepernick, a team spokesman called the sale of his home an "investment decision."
Modkins was also asked if there were any indications that Kaepernick wants to return to the 49ers next year. "I haven't seen anything to indicate that he didn't," he answered. "Like I said, he comes in and he works his tail off. He does all he can on Sundays to help us win. I don't think that's Colin's focus. I don't think that's where he's at. That's another discussion with different people. He's been great with us, great around me, and he's trying his best to do the best he can for our team."
While a report by Ian Rapoport of NFL Media stated that Kaepernick would opt out of his contract following the season, the quarterback said that a decision has not been made yet. "No, I haven't made any decisions on that," said Kaepernick when asked if he would void the remaining years on his contract. "Those decisions will come after the season."
"Right now, I'm part of the 49ers," Kaepernick continued. "My focus is helping my teammates get a win this week."
