Today, the Los Angeles Times reported that Kaepernick bought a 1,733 square foot condominium for $3.21 million in the TriBeCa area of New York City.
"The purchase, which closed in July, was made using the same trust that holds the Bay Area property. Kaepernick's sister, Devon, is listed as the trustee," wrote Neal J. Leitereg of the Los Angeles Times.
The signs would appear to point in the direction of Kaepernick not expecting to remain with the 49ers. Of course, that is still speculation at this point. The quarterback has not spoken up about his future with the team. Following his game against the Chicago Bears, Kaepernick was asked about his contract situation. "Once again, as I've said all along, my focus is on the next game," he said. "My focus has been on the Bears this past week."
"As Kaepernick walked onto the University of Central Florida practice field Thursday, he was asked about his house, and rather than comment, he smiled and kept walking," Cam Inman of Bay Area News Group wrote on Thursday.
Later that day, a team spokesman, on behalf of Kaepernick, clarified that the sale of Kaepernick's home is "an investment decision."
Prior to Sunday's loss in Chicago, Kaepernick's stock was on the rise. Since Week 9, following the 49ers' bye week, Kaepernick had thrown for 1,110 yards with eight touchdowns and only two interceptions. Against the Bears, he completed just one of his five passes for four yards before being benched early in the fourth quarter for Blaine Gabbert.
On Sunday, the Jets will get a first-hand look at Kaepernick when they travel to Santa Clara to play the 49ers on Sunday.
