The 49ers will save $9.75 million by executing this deal before March 14th at 4 PM eastern, when Smith is scheduled to receive a $1 million roster bonus. Plus, the 49ers will be off the hook for a $1 million incentive and a $250,000 workout bonus.
Now the 49ers can either stand pat and redo a deal or 2, or cut a vet or 2. Namely Parys Haralson ($2.87 million saved), Jonathan Goodwin ($4.35 million saved) and David Akers ($3.05 million saved). I would add Donte Whitner, but with no option to replace him on the team and the fact that Dashon Goldson isn't signed for 2013, I wouldn't expect that.
This also likely means that Goldson won't be tagged, unless the 49ers make major changes prior to the deadline to franchise Goldson or anyone on the roster who is an unrestricted free agent.
So look for the 49ers to stand pat, redo a deal or 2, or like said, release 1 or 2 vets, and then let the show begin on March 12th.
