49ers visit with defensive backs Budda Baker and Ahkello Witherspoon

Apr 11, 2017 at 4:48 PM--

The San Francisco 49ers hosted two defensive backs on Tuesday. The first was Colorado cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon and the second was Washington safety Budda Baker. News of Baker's visit was reported by Ian Rapoport of NFL Media while Witherspoon's visit was noticed by Niners Wire contributor, Rob Lowder.

Baker is a two-time first-team all-conference honors recipient (2015 and 2016). The 5-foot-10, 195-pound safety has drawn a comparison to former Indianapolis Colts safety Bob Sanders by NFL Media draft analyst Lance Zierlein. In 2016, Baker had 71 tackles, six passes defended, and two interceptions through 14 games.

"They want to get a free safety type," said Steve Wyche on NFL Network while discussing Baker's visit. "They're switching from a 3-4 defense to a 4-3 with a single high safety. They need a center fielder type of safety because Eric Reid, he's going to be moving into the box. Again, let's look at the Seahawks' framework on defense. Reid's going to be the Kam Chancellor role. They need someone to play the Earl Thomas role."

Witherspoon reportedly posted a photo from inside the 49ers headquarters on Instagram. That photo has since been deleted and is nowhere to be found on his Instagram account.

The 6-foot-3 and 198-pound Witherspoon was one of three members of Colorado's secondary who earned second-team All-Pac-12 honors and was tied with teammate Tedric Thompson for first place in the nation with 23 passes defended in 2016 – one of which was an interception. He also made 23 tackles and had an interception last season.
