Purdy's historic rise from "Mr. Irrelevant" to franchise quarterback has captivated the NFL world. Bleacher Report's Matt Holder recently examined the top hidden gems from the last five drafts and named Purdy the clear standout from 2022.
"Not even the 49ers thought Mr. Irrelevant would be this good," Holder wrote. "Otherwise…well, Brock Purdy would have been drafted well before he was even close to being Mr. Irrelevant.
"A shade above 6'0" and 212 pounds, and with underwhelming arm strength, there weren't many reasons to believe the Iowa State product would become a quality starting quarterback in the NFL. Additionally, he needed to go to the right system to have success in the league."
Fortunately for the 49ers, that's exactly what happened.
Initially fighting for a roster spot, Purdy seized the opportunity when injuries sidelined both Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo. Once under center, he never looked back. Purdy led San Francisco to back-to-back NFC Championship Game appearances and a Super Bowl berth, silencing critics and proving he was capable of success at the pro level.
"Luckily, the Iowa State product is playing for the perfect head coach to fit his skill set," Holder continued. "Kyle Shanahan's offense features a heavy dose of play action and timing throws to allow Purdy to flourish.
"On top of that, the quarterback's ability to create plays with his legs and throw while on the run has been much better than expected."
This offseason, the 49ers made their long-term commitment official, signing Purdy to a five-year, $265 million contract extension. The deal not only solidifies his status as the team's franchise quarterback but also signals the front office's confidence in his ability to lead San Francisco to a championship.
The fact that Purdy—the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft—has outperformed every quarterback selected ahead of him is a reminder of how unpredictable the draft can be. His journey serves as inspiration for future prospects, proving that no matter where you're selected, greatness can still be achieved.
