Tiller, who turned 28 on March 13, was a sixth-round selection by the New Orleans Saints in the 2012 NFL Draft. The offensive lineman spent time on the practice squads of the then-San Diego Chargers and the Green Bay Packers before being initially signed to the 49ers' practice squad in October of 2014. In 2015, defensive end Quinton Dial called Tiller the team's best offensive lineman despite only facing him while he was on the practice squad. Tiller was elevated to the 53-man roster, appeared in 12 games, and started seven.
In 2016, Tiller appeared in 15 games for the 49ers and started seven before missing the final game of the season with an ankle injury. He began the season as the team's starting right guard but eventually lost the job to rookie Joshua Garnett despite finishing the season as the team's third-highest graded offensive lineman (behind Joe Staley and Daniel Kilgore), according to Pro Football Focus and the team's highest-graded guard.
Tiller was initially an exclusive-rights free agent going into the new league year but the 49ers opted to not make a qualifying offer for the offensive lineman.
Free agent signings no longer count toward compensatory picks so Tiller will not be calculated into the formula for the 49ers. He likely would not have counted anyway since San Francisco has signed a number of free agents this offseason.
