49ers-Packers: Kyle Shanahan wants Trey Lance to 'let it rip' while imitating Aaron Rodgers in practice

By David Bonilla

Trey Lance has a tough task this week. No, he is not expecting to start Saturday's playoff game against the Green Bay Packers. As part of the practice squad, the San Francisco 49ers rookie has to mimic future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers for the defense in practice. Lance's development has benefited from imitating opposing quarterbacks all season. Sometimes that is a versatile quarterback like Kyler Murray or Justin Fields. Other times, it is a more stationary passer, like Kirk Cousins. Lance studying Rodgers this week can only make him a better quarterback. "Aaron does a real good job of not making bad decisions and not turning the ball over," head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters before Tuesday's practice. "But he also makes all the

With some outside help from a former 49ers nemesis, Robbie Gould kicks his team into NFC Championship Game

By Kirk Larrabee

Had it not been for a couple of assists from the outside, it's possible that San Francisco 49ers kicker Robbie Gould might not have been able to hit the game-winning kick that sent his team into the NFC Championship. Gould accounted for seven points (two field goals, one extra point) in the 49ers' 13-10 win over the Green Bay Packers in Saturday night's Divisional Playoff game, with his biggest moment coming on a 45-yard field goal through wintery conditions as time expired to send the 49ers home victorious. Credit Gould with making the kick in such conditions, but he also asked for some help before the game that wound up making a difference in the end. In preparation for what he knew would be a difficult weather environment at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Gould

How the 49ers can beat the Packers: Keys to Victory

By Chris Beno

Things haven't changed much for the Green Bay Packers since their Week 3 victory over the San Francisco 49ers at Levi's Stadium. The Packers are still very much that same team. The same can't be said for the 49ers, who have tweaked some things since their rocky start to the season. The 49ers went 3-5 through the first 9 weeks of the season, but since Week 10 they have won 9 of their last 11 games, which was the best record in the NFL during that span. When looking at the differences between the Week 3 49ers and the current team, three things jump out to me. 1. Defensive tackle Arik Armstead has been moved inside as opposed to being strictly an edge rusher. It's no coincidence that the 49ers have since been the top defense against the

Steve Young credits great coaching, Deebo Samuel for 49ers' turnaround, believes team can win it all

Things didn't look so hot for the San Francisco 49ers in October. The team was coming off a four-game losing streak, and their lofty postseason hopes looked more like wishful thinking. Then the season turned around. The Niners went on a run, and in the final week of the regular season, clinched a playoff berth. That run, paired with the upset win against the NFC East champion Dallas Cowboys in the opening round of the playoffs, has given the 49ers a lot of confidence. The team believes it can beat anyone. However, the next task isn't an easy one. San Francisco will have to knock off the Green Bay Packers this weekend at Lambeau Field if it hopes to reach the NFC Championship Game for the second time in three seasons. Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young wouldn't
