For 49ers’ defense, a standout game after a loss to forget

Dec 20, 2015 at 11:21 PM--

When 49ers head coach Jim Tomsula cited his team for a failure in the area of "fine focus" Sunday, he probably should have aimed that microscope at the offense. The 49ers surrendered just 242 yards to the Bengals, Cincinnati's lowest production of the season and the best stoppage of the year by the sharply focused 49ers. [...] they faced A.J. McCarron in his first NFL start. [...] McCarron, as the saying goes, is an NFL player, gets paid, too, and the 49ers held him to 192 passing yards. Had it not been for two bobbled passes by 49ers tight end Vance McDonald and a bad punt by Bradley Pinion, the 49ers might have marched into halftime 0-0. The Bengals finished with just one scoring drive of more than 36 yards. Credit defensive coordinator Eric Mangini, who has played all roles this season, from dunce to Mangenius.

There was a heavy amount of frustration from Cowboys fans Sunday after their team fell 23-17 to the San Francisco 49ers, as evidenced by a few of them throwing things on the field following the loss. Video from Jane Slater of the NFL Network showed fans throwing objects from the stands as the officials and Cowboys players left the field. Cowboys defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence can be seen deflecting one of the objects with his helmet. #Cowboys fans throwing things at their own players. Got this sent to me by one. Be better

Jimmy Garoppolo seemingly yells '[expletive] the Packers' to Robbie Gould after 49ers' game-winning kick

There was a lot of emotion on the field after Robbie Gould kicked the game-winning field goal to send his San Francisco 49ers to the NFC Championship Game for the second time in three years. The kick sealed the 13-10 upset against the No. 1 seed Green Bay Packers, breaking the hearts of the fans in a packed Lambeau Field. NFL Network's Stacey Dales followed Gould after the game, recording him with her phone. "Man, that feels good," Gould said as he made his way through the crowd on the field. A fired-up Jimmy Garoppolo approached the veteran kicker to offer his congratulations on sealing the playoff win. "You're a [expletive] legend, man," Garoppolo told Gould before embracing the kicker. Then, it seems as though Garoppolo

Raiders likely to interview 49ers' DeMeco Ryans after NFC Championship Game, per report

Defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans' stock is rising, especially after helping knock off the top-seeded Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field this past weekend. Even though he is a first-year coordinator, Ryans is a candidate for multiple NFL head-coaching vacancies. The Minnesota Vikings interviewed him on Sunday. The Las Vegas Raiders are also interested. That interview, however, probably won't come this week. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reports that the Raiders are willing to wait until after Sunday's NFC Championship Game matchup between Ryans' 49ers and the Los Angeles Rams. "That was the working expectation after Ryans' interview with Vikings on Sunday. Las Vegas not in [a] major rush," Fowler tweeted out on Monday

Arik Armstead's unselfish play a big reason for 49ers' impressive run defense, says DeMeco Ryans

By David Bonilla
Jan 14

The San Francisco 49ers run defense has been as good as anybody's through the second half of the season. In fact, The Athletic's David Lombardi pointed out that the 49ers own the NFL's top run defense since their Week 6 bye. That's about when defensive lineman Arik Armstead moved to primarily play inside, filling in for an injured Javon Kinlaw. The 49ers don't see that as a coincidence. "I think our run defense improved drastically because of the unselfish play by Arik Armstead," defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans said on Friday. "I think people kind of forget we lost our starter in Kinlaw early in the year, and we were trying to figure that out inside. When you want to
