John Lynch shares behind-the-scenes details of 49ers' decision to stick with Jimmy Garoppolo

Few expected San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to start the regular-season finale against the Los Angeles Rams this past weekend. Reports gave the impression that he wouldn't be able to properly grip the football, much less throw it downfield to his receivers. Ian Rapoport reported that Garoppolo is expected to have offseason surgery. Head coach Kyle Shanahan acknowledged that as a possibility. The quarterback has a torn ligament and chipped bone in his right thumb. Still, Garoppolo delivered a gutsy performance, fought through the pain, and led his 49ers to a thrilling 27-24 overtime win at SoFi Stadium. It wasn't until the Tuesday

A lot of people like to criticize Jimmy Garoppolo. He's not the type of quarterback who plays mistake-free football. However, he does win football games—a lot more than he loses. Garoppolo is 37-15 as a starter, counting the playoffs. Some will argue that often, the 49ers win games despite Garoppolo. This past weekend's playoff win against the Dallas Cowboys is a perfect example of that. Garoppolo tossed a costly interception that kept Dallas in the game, but the team held on for a 23-17 victory. Garoppolo is banged up, though. He was already playing through an injured right thumb that causes pain with each throw. In addition, Garoppolo suffered a right shoulder sprain in the game. Nevertheless, he's been practicing this week, and all signs point to him

The same can't be said for the 49ers, who have tweaked some things since their rocky start to the season. The 49ers went 3-5 through the first 9 weeks of the season, but since Week 10 they have won 9 of their last 11 games, which was the best record in the NFL during that span. When looking at the differences between the Week 3 49ers and the current team, three things jump out to me. 1. Defensive tackle Arik Armstead has been moved inside as opposed to being strictly an edge rusher. It's no coincidence that the 49ers have since been the top defense against the
