The San Francisco 49ers won just six games last year after a Super Bowl appearance the season before. Most have blamed a league-high number of injuries for the team's regression and expect much more from Kyle Shanahan's squad in 2021 — assuming it can stay relatively healthy. The NFC West is highly competitive and could still be the best division in football. While San Francisco is not expected to repeat at the bottom of the divisional standings, it will be a battle to finish at the top. However, it sounds like oddsmakers have confidence in the 49ers. Bovada released the odds for the best overall record in the NFL. It's no surprise to see last season's Super Bowl participants at the top of the list. Jimmy Garoppolo is trying to fend off anyone from overtaking him on the depth chart — specifically, the No. 3 overall pick, Trey Lance. You would think that after 55 years of Super Bowls, at least one rookie quarterback would have hoisted the Lombardi Trophy following his team's victory. But it has not happened. In fact, no rookie quarterback has even led his team to the game. None. In 55 years! A few have come close. Only three have led their teams as far as the conference championship game. In 2004, Ben Roethlisberger led the Pittsburgh Steelers to the AFC Championship Game. Mark Sanchez took the New York Jets to the AFC Championship

During ESPN's First Take, Louis Riddick weighed in on the quarterback situation for the San Francisco 49ers. He fully expects Jimmy Garoppolo to start Week 1 against the Detroit Lions, remain the starter, and play well throughout the 2021 season ... with one caveat. The veteran quarterback must do something he hasn't been able to do throughout his career — stay healthy. Injuries sidelined Garoppolo for 23 games over the last three seasons. He missed 10 games last season. The quarterback has only once made it out of September injury-free during a season in which he started. That was the 2019 campaign that saw Garoppolo coming off an ACL injury from the previous year. If Garoppolo can remain in the lineup, Riddick feels that he will respond well to
