Everyone has been impressed by San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Brock Purdy. It's not just because he was the last overall pick in last year's draft. Purdy has been playing some impressive football. On Saturday against the Seattle Seahawks, in his first-ever NFL playoff game, Purdy finished the game 18-of-30 for 332 yards and three touchdowns, adding four carries for 16 yards and a rushing touchdown in the 41-23 win.

The performances over the last seven games are changing the minds of anyone who might have thought Purdy is a fluke. There has been talk of a quarterback battle between Purdy and the former No. 3 overall pick, Trey Lance, this offseason. One NFL insider even wonders how the rookie quarterback isn't the frontrunner in any battle.

"He's done some amazing things," Ian Rapoport said Monday on KNBR's Murph & Mac show. "I am impressed by all of the athletic stuff, but I'm more impressed by how he doesn't seem to be bothered by anything."

Rapoport notes that he hears others downplay Purdy's performances, attributing them to playing within head coach Kyle Shanahan's system. However, the insider notes that he has seen some quarterbacks not play well within the system, so he doesn't believe that has anything to do with it.

"Trey Lance, I think, could be very good, but it's not like he was blowing the doors off the thing when he was in there earlier in the year," Rapoport said. "Brock Purdy comes in and has got that thing humming. I think it's really impressive."

If Rapoport had to guess, he would predict that Lance will not be the 49ers' starting quarterback next season, barring an injury. That's a hard pill to swallow for a team that gave up the draft equivalent of a fortune for Lance.

There will be significant focus on the 49ers' quarterback situation during the upcoming offseason. It will likely be one of the more intriguing storylines in Santa Clara, especially if the Purdy Magic continues deep into the playoffs.

Said Rapoport: "What you're going to hear, especially from people like me, and are already talking about it, is what are they going to do next year?"

Rapoport acknowledges that had Purdy and the 49ers lost on Saturday, it might be easier to start discussing door number two, whether that be Lance or someone like Tom Brady. Purdy did win, though.

"Like, how is he not the starting quarterback next year?" Rapoport said. "... What more do you want? What is out there that he is not doing?"

All fair questions.

Rapoport: 49ers send clear message to teams inquiring about Brandon Aiyuk

By David Bonilla
Apr 16

Ian Rapoport didn't offer much of an update on the ongoing contract negotiations between the San Francisco 49ers and their standout wide receiver, Brandon Aiyuk. However, the NFL insider emphasized one thing: The team is not entertaining trade discussions at this juncture. Reacting to Aiyuk's decision to unfollow the 49ers on Instagram, Rapoport couldn't help but chuckle at the latest development. This practice has become commonplace among players who are unhappy with their contract situations. Wide receiver Deebo Samuel similarly took this action in 2022 before requesting to be traded just before the draft. Things have yet to escalate that far with Aiyuk, but Rapoport sees his

Why Ian Rapoport believes Brandon Aiyuk might stay with 49ers

By David Bonilla

Brandon Aiyuk has been clear about his desire to receive fair compensation from the San Francisco 49ers—or any NFL team, for that matter. "I'm trying to get what I deserve," Aiyuk said last month on a podcast. "I feel like this season, this season playing football, I figured out who I was as a person and a player — what I bring to the table, what I bring to the locker room, what I bring to the organization." General manager John Lynch affirms that the 49ers aim to keep Aiyuk around, enduring he remains with the team for the remainder of his career. However, a recent report states there's

Why one analyst is worried for Brock Purdy if 49ers trade Brandon Aiyuk

By David Bonilla
Apr 18

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy achieved a remarkable feat in 2023, setting a single-season franchise record with 4,280 passing yards. This accomplishment is noteworthy, considering the illustrious quarterbacks who have graced the organization's history. A significant portion of those yards came from wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who amassed a career-high and team-leading 1,342 receiving yards. Most of his 75 catches originated from passes thrown by Purdy. Amidst significant offseason chatter surrounding the 49ers' star receiver, including several unsubstantiated trade rumors, Aiyuk's future remains uncertain. Former NFL player James Jones, now an analyst, expressed concern for Purdy should Aiyuk's tenure in the Bay Area come to an end. "I

49ers' Brock Purdy addresses young fan's question about scripted NFL

By David Bonilla

Taylor Swift, the Kansas City Chiefs, and a Super Bowl overtime matchup. If the NFL is scripted, the league came up with a good one this past season—unless you're a San Francisco 49ers fan. During his inaugural youth football camp at Levi's Stadium this past weekend, 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy faced a candid inquiry from one young participant: Is the NFL scripted? "No, the NFL is not scripted," a smiling Purdy responded. However, the quarterback added, "Good
