Why a 49ers-Panthers trade for Jimmy Garoppolo never got off the ground

The San Francisco 49ers are focused on tonight's game against the reigning Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams. However, the Carolina Panthers have already played their Week 4 game and are shifting focus toward their next opponent—the 49ers. Naturally, that led to a question for Panthers head coach Matt Rhule about quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

The Panthers were long-assumed to be a likely offseason destination for the 49ers quarterback. However, that changed when the Cleveland Browns traded Baker Mayfield to Carolina.

According to Joe Person of The Athletic, Rhule had no desire to discuss something other than what was happening this season. He didn't want to talk about Garoppolo when asked about the Panthers' interest this past offseason.

Person went on to share what he's heard regarding why trade talks between the 49ers and Panthers never got off the ground. The reasons for hesitation are probably similar to those of other potentially interested teams.

One, money was an issue. At the time, Garoppolo was set to earn a base salary of over $24 million. That number was reduced to $6.5 million after his recent contract restructure with San Francisco. Although, Garoppolo is set to earn a lot more now that he is the starter, thanks to playing incentives laid out in the deal.

Two, the Panthers had no desire to give up the draft capital that the 49ers were asking. San Francisco reportedly sought multiple selections for the veteran quarterback, seemingly deemed too much for a player with several question marks.

Three, and probably the most significant reason why the 49ers never moved the quarterback, there were health concerns. Garoppolo undergoing shoulder surgery in March scared off any interested suitors. With months of recovery ahead of him, teams didn't want to wait to see if Garoppolo made a full recovery and moved on to fill any quarterback needs.

Garoppolo remained with the 49ers. Starter Trey Lance suffered a season-ending ankle injury, leaving Garoppolo as QB1 for the rest of the season. While the veteran quarterback played uninspiring football in Week 3 against the Denver Broncos, the alternative is starting rookie Brock Purdy.

Tonight at 5:15 pm PT, Garoppolo and the 49ers will host the Rams at Levi's Stadium. After that, they will shift focus to their Week 5 road opponent, the 1-3 Panthers. Garoppolo will have an opportunity to show the one-time potential suitor that he is 100 percent healthy and may have been a risk worth taking. Or, depending on how tonight and next weekend go, he may prove that they did the right thing by avoiding a trade.

Why one analyst is worried for Brock Purdy if 49ers trade Brandon Aiyuk

By David Bonilla
Apr 18

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy achieved a remarkable feat in 2023, setting a single-season franchise record with 4,280 passing yards. This accomplishment is noteworthy, considering the illustrious quarterbacks who have graced the organization's history. A significant portion of those yards came from wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who amassed a career-high and team-leading 1,342 receiving yards. Most of his 75 catches originated from passes thrown by Purdy. Amidst significant offseason chatter surrounding the 49ers' star receiver, including several unsubstantiated trade rumors, Aiyuk's future remains uncertain. Former NFL player James Jones, now an analyst, expressed concern for Purdy should Aiyuk's tenure in the Bay Area come to an end. "I

Deebo Samuel and Brock Purdy are why the 49ers can afford to pay Brandon Aiyuk

By David Bonilla
Apr 10

It's evident that the San Francisco 49ers engaged in long-term financial planning. Much discussion has centered around the feasibility of the team committing significant financial resources to two wide receivers, Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel. Some skeptics question the wisdom of such heavy investment in a single position, especially considering that the 49ers handed Samuel a substantial three-year extension merely two years ago. Adding complexity to this debate is the impending contract extension for quarterback Brock Purdy, positioning him to become the highest-paid player on the team. He will likely even become one of the NFL's highest-paid players. Where he ranks in average salary will depend upon whether he can replicate the stellar performance of his Pro Bowl 2023

A questionable rumor surfaced on Wednesday regarding the Pittsburgh Steelers' interest in San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. Sports Illustrated contributor Noah Strackbein reported that the AFC team was seemingly confident they could pull off a trade for Aiyuk. However, the credibility of this report comes into question due to the assertion that the Steelers believe they could acquire Aiyuk at a bargain price, possibly in exchange for a second-round draft pick and a late-round selection. 7-round mock draft: 49ers trade up to fortify secondary

By David Bonilla

The San Francisco 49ers first selection in next week's draft comes at No. 31 overall. However, NFL Media analyst Chad Reuter doesn't have the Bay Area team remaining at that spot in the first round. In his seven-round mock draft, he envisions the 49ers striking a deal with the Green Bay Packers to move up six spots to No. 25 overall, where they select former Alabama cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry. Reuter notes, "Whether it's for a cornerback like McKinstry, an offensive lineman or a receiver, the 49ers could very well give up a mid-round pick to acquire one of the few missing pieces on an otherwise potent roster." The rest of the mock draft reveals at least part of the
