Mike McDaniel's hygiene was in the headlines on Wednesday. The first-year head coach for the Miami Dolphins shared that he would often go from game days until late in the week without showering while serving as an assistant with the San Francisco 49ers.

McDaniel doesn't do that now because, as a head coach, he has to meet with too many people regularly.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan joined KNBR on Thursday afternoon and was asked about his former assistant's comments.

"God, that's almost a setup because I would love to just go off on this like we were hanging out," Shanahan responded on the Tolbert & Copes show. "He's definitely not lying. That's accurate.

"It's funny. That stuff happens, though. I'm not saying necessarily the showering stuff, but when you're a coordinator, and you don't have a position and stuff, I mean, you're just sitting in your room so concerned with certain things.

"And it does change when that's how you've done it for a while, and now, all of a sudden, you've got to go talk in front of the team, you've got to go to a press conference, you've got to go speak to the owner. It's a little different if the head coach is walking around looking homeless every single day like he hasn't showered.

"I'm not trying to offend anybody on that, but it's something that you do got to think of, which I'm sure he just started thinking about it once this season started."

You can listen to the entire conversation with Shanahan below.

49ers' Brock Purdy has classy response to criticism

By David Bonilla
Apr 16

Since entering the NFL, Brock Purdy has faced his fair share of critics. The San Francisco 49ers made him the last overall pick in 2022, thrusting him into the starting role during his rookie season only due to two quarterback injuries. Purdy then led the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game. He followed up with a remarkable sophomore season, setting a single-season franchise record with 4,280 yards and guiding San Francisco to the Super Bowl during his 2023 campaign. RELATED: Purdy hopes Shanahan makes addition to 49ers playbook While Purdy's critics have diminished, some skeptics still question whether he deserves to be considered among the league's

Mike Silver on how Deebo Samuel's contract might be the starting point for a Brandon Aiyuk extension

By Al Sacco
Apr 16

With the 2024 NFL Draft less than a week away, it's common for the rumor mill to start churning, especially with players who are actively seeking a new contract. It was just two short years ago that WR Deebo Samuel requested a trade from the San Francisco 49ers prior to draft day, only for cooler heads to prevail and eventually agree to a new deal. Now, it's WR Brandon Aiyuk's turn to try and get paid and rumors surfaced over the weekend that he too would request to be dealt. While that report was quickly shot down by his agent, there's still a lot of discussion about Aiyuk's future and if other teams will come calling on draft night. Breaking down the 49ers drafts under John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan

By Marc Adams
Apr 20

We are less than one week away from the NFL Draft, and the San Francisco 49ers have their first day-one draft pick since 2021. That was the year they selected QB Trey Lance number three overall. The trade-up to get Lance cost the 49ers their first-round picks in 2022 and 2023. And now that they are back in the first round, at pick 31, fans are anxious to see what the team does with the pick. And with former assistant GM, Adam Peters, now in Washington, it will be interesting to see how well the 49ers draft without Peters in the room. We looked back at the seven drafts GM John Lynch and Head Coach Kyle Shanahan have led to see what information we could pull from those drafts. There were plenty of hits, plenty of misses, and a few surprises along the way. The draft picks are
