49ers coach: Samuel Womack has what it takes to make it in the NFL

Aug 14, 2022 at 3:21 PM--

San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans says everyone is competing during training camp and the preseason. No one is assuming anything. Instead, players are fighting for roles this season. That includes the competition between Darqueze Dennard and rookie Samuel Womack III for the nickel cornerback job.

Womack made a strong case for himself with two interceptions during Friday night's preseason game against the Green Bay Packers. The rookie cornerback hauled in two interceptions on the way to a 28-21 49ers victory. While the performance may have been a surprise to many, it was no surprise to Ryans.

"For Womack, those are plays you saw him make in college," Ryans told reporters after Sunday's practice. "He was always sticky in coverage, contested, contesting the throws, a lot of PBUs, a lot of interceptions in college. So I've seen him make those plays. Seeing him make those plays in the game as well. Seen him make those plays in practice. So it wasn't a surprise that he was sticky in coverage. He was exactly where he needs to be, and a smart player making really big-time plays for us.

"Womack, he has to continue. He's another guy who just has to continue to improve off of what he's done. He made two good plays but he has to continue to improve his technique. Everything that we ask him to do, he has to continue to get better and excel at all those things."

Womack feels he's had an easier transition from college to the NFL than most others. He has credited the Toledo Rockets football team running a similar coverages to that of the 49ers defense. Ryans, however, acknowledges that it is much more than the defensive similarities between the 49ers and his collegiate team.

"Credit to Womack; he's a smart player who's detailed in what he does," Ryans explained. "He studies off the field. He's asking questions on the field, in the meeting rooms. So he's a very smart guy who has what it takes to make it in this league just by his mental makeup. So that does give him a head-up on guys just because of the mental makeup, and he cares about what he's doing. He cares about what he's putting on tape, so that's going to allow him to go far if he continues to do what he's doing."

By Al Sacco

With the 2024 NFL Draft less than a week away, it's common for the rumor mill to start churning, especially with players who are actively seeking a new contract. It was just two short years ago that WR Deebo Samuel requested a trade from the San Francisco 49ers prior to draft day, only for cooler heads to prevail and eventually agree to a new deal. Now, it's WR Brandon Aiyuk's turn to try and get paid and rumors surfaced over the weekend that he too would request to be dealt. While that report was quickly shot down by his agent, there's still a lot of discussion about Aiyuk's future and if other teams will come calling on draft night. Trevor Sikkema of Pro Football Focus unveiled a seven-round mock draft for the San Francisco 49ers, addressing several key needs for the team in the 10-pick projection. Interestingly, the mock draft sees the team adding two legacy players. But before delving into that, let's examine the first three selections. Sikkema has the 49ers shoring up their offensive line at pick No. 31 with the selection of former Arizona offensive tackle Jordan Morgan. Morgan allowed 14 pressures and two sacks in his 477 pass-blocking snaps at left tackle in 2023. He earned an impressive pass-blocking grade of 87.3 and an overall grade of

Schrager mock draft has 49ers adding 'universally liked and respected' receiver

By David Bonilla
Apr 16

With only nine days remaining until the start of the 2024 NFL Draft, Good Morning Football's Peter Schrager revealed his first mock draft of the year. While most might expect the San Francisco 49ers to target an offensive lineman, Schrager has the team bolstering its wide receiver corps with an SEC talent. Schrager has the 49ers using the No. 31 overall pick to select former Georgia wide receiver Ladd McConkey, whose 2023 campaign with the Bulldogs was limited by back and ankle injuries. "McConkey in the first round? Yes," Schrager wrote. "Above guys like Troy Franklin and Keon Coleman? Perhaps. I've spoken to a
