By now, most have heard about Jimmy Garoppolo's offseason vanishing acts. Tight end George Kittle has called him the "worst texter of all time," saying that even he has difficulty getting a hold of the San Francisco 49ers quarterback outside of team-organized activities.

Garoppolo typically becomes a ghost for much of the early portion of the offseason. That reportedly took the 49ers by surprise after the quarterback signed his five-year mega-deal with the team in February of 2018.

"Once he left that press conference, nobody heard from him for weeks and weeks," one member of that coaching staff told Michael Silver of the San Francisco Chronicle. "He didn't return calls, he didn't return texts — he basically just vanished. And we were looking at each other going, 'What just happened?'"

Then you have Garoppolo blindsiding the 49ers this offseason with the decision to undergo shoulder surgery, throwing a wrench into the team's trade plans and conversations.

Second-year quarterback Trey Lance has been the opposite. He has shared training videos and worked hard this offseason with teammates like wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk to prepare for his first season as a full-time starting NFL quarterback.

So far, there have been no questions surrounding Lance's work ethic. Instead, everyone has indicated that the 22-year-old is a first-one-in-and-last-one-out type of player.

As for Garoppolo, the report doesn't really matter at this point. It's just an interesting anecdote as we prepare for the start of the preseason. The quarterback is not expected to be with the 49ers much longer, with the team still clinging to hope that a trade partner will materialize before the start of the regular season.

Even if a team is interested in dealing for the veteran quarterback, unless the contract is reworked, there is only one year remaining on the deal. Garoppolo would certainly work his tail off for a new team, given how late in the offseason a potential trade might happen. After this season, he would become a free agent anyway. Again, unless the contract is reworked and years are added. However, Garoppolo might be seen more as a short-term solution for a potential buyer like, oh, let's say, the Cleveland Browns.

Lance, the 49ers' quarterback of the future, will showcase his progress on Friday night in the 49ers' first preseason game, a matchup against the Green Bay Packers at Levi's Stadium.

49ers see impending mega-deal for Brock Purdy as a 'good problem'

By David Bonilla
Mar 27

The San Francisco 49ers are actively working to sign wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk to a contract extension, aiming to maintain their talented young core of players. The team has reached agreements with star players during each of the last four offseasons, securing George Kittle in 2020, Fred Warner in 2021, Deebo Samuel in 2022, and Nick Bosa in 2023. Another key contributor poised for a new deal next offseason is quarterback Brock Purdy. Over the last couple of years, the 49ers have been in the unique position of not having to pay much money (relatively) to stock their quarterback room while reaping the benefits of superb play from their starting signal-caller. However,

Steelers reportedly interested in trading for 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk

The Jacksonville Jaguars were reportedly interested in trading for star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. However, the San Francisco 49ers' asking price of the No. 17 overall pick plus a player was seemingly too high for the team. Now, it appears another AFC team might be trying to pry Aiyuk away from the West Coast. Andrew Fillipponi of Pittsburgh-area radio station 93.7 The Fan reports that the Steelers are looking to work out a deal with the 49ers for the receiver. "Sources: The Steelers have looked into 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk," Fillipponi wrote on social media. "He's entering the last year of his contract. Steelers would have to execute a sign and trade. But they've shown

49ers Notebook: Crucial offseason for Purdy; O-line confidence; Shanahan on new kickoff rule, Dobbs signing; Hufanga eyes training camp return

By David Bonilla
Mar 26

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan doesn't have to field as many quarterback questions as he did a year ago after Brock Purdy underwent surgery, the arrival of Sam Darnold, and the uncertainty surrounding the future of Trey Lance. The quarterback situation is clearer now than it has been in recent years. For Purdy, this offseason holds significant importance. It marks the first time he can focus on on-field improvement during minicamps, OTAs, and training camp. While he had this opportunity as a rookie in 2022, he was buried on the depth chart, limiting his practice reps. Last year, Purdy was still recovering from surgery to repair the torn ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right elbow. He didn't get to throw to his teammates until training camp in
