49ers Mailbag: Can Kyle Shanahan develop QBs? Was Mike McDaniel the secret sauce for the offense? What are the dimensions of an NFL end zone? (Asking for a friend)

The San Francisco 49ers have fallen to 1-2, with the Los Angeles Rams coming to Levi's Stadium on Monday night. It's hard to predict what will happen in that game. You would think the Rams will destroy the struggling 49ers. But last year, we thought the same thing. Instead, the 49ers blew out the Rams and turned their season around. Can history repeat itself? The 49ers' defense is as good as ever. The offense, on the other hand, has not been good. The offensive production has been reminiscent of the days when the 49ers hired defensive-minded head coaches like Mike Nolan and Mike Singletary. This defense is Super Bowl-caliber. Right now, this offense isn't even NFL-caliber. The 49ers can't blame anyone but themselves for their 1-2 start. They are much better than

No matter how you want to spin last night's loss to the Denver Broncos, this one was solely on the quarterback. Jimmy Garoppolo finished the game, completing 18 passes on 29 attempts for 211 yards, one touchdown, and an interception. Statistically, Garoppolo was better than Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson, but as Garoppolo says, stats don't matter. It's all about winning football games. It's almost like 49ers fans are stuck in an episode of Rod Serling's Twilight Zone when Jimmy Garoppolo plays. One week you get this fired-up style of quarterback that appears willing to do whatever it takes to win a game, and then you have the incompetent type of quarterback that looks lost like a deer in headlights. The first quarter of the game seemed promising. The

The San Francisco 49ers are playing the Seattle Seahawks at Levi's Stadium. It is the Niners' home opener. The team entered the matchup without tight end George Kittle and offensive lineman Daniel Brunskill. The former is dealing with a groin strain, while the latter is attempting to return from a hamstring injury. Both are among five inactive players for the 49ers. Below are the 49ers-Seahawks in-game injury updates. QB Trey Lance (ankle, ruled out) Jimmy Garoppolo entered the game for injured quarterback Trey Lance, who went down late in the first quarter. Lance was carted off the field after sustaining what appeared to be a lower right leg injury.

'It's an emotional game': Jimmy Garoppolo woke up fast in return as 49ers starter

Before kickoff against the Seattle Seahawks, Jimmy Garoppolo felt he was ready if his number got called. Remember, the veteran quarterback spent most of the offseason recovering from shoulder surgery and didn't participate in team meetings or even have a playbook until signing a restructured one-year deal just before the start of the regular season. On Sunday, the San Francisco 49ers did call Garoppolo's number. The quarterback entered the game late in the first quarter due to a devastating and heartbreaking injury to second-year quarterback Trey Lance, who will undergo season-ending surgery on his broken ankle on Monday. "Right away, I felt sorry for Trey," Garoppolo told FOX
