How 49ers GM John Lynch responded to criticisms of Trey Lance

By David Bonilla

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch is a Hall of Fame safety who spent his playing days knocking out those who challenged him, so he's not necessarily someone you would want to cross. Yet, some high-profile individuals have come out and criticized the team's choice of quarterback—Trey Lance. The most vocal criticisms this week came from former NFL coach Mike Martz. "I've never seen anything about this kid that was encouraging at all," Martz said during a podcast appearance. "He really has to plant himself to make a good throw. He's not a quick decision guy. Everybody's shot in the rear about him for being a mobile guy making plays with his feet – he

49ers' Kyle Shanahan hopes Trey Lance's versatility becomes a significant advantage

Trey Lance ran the football 13 times for 54 yards in the San Francisco 49ers' regular-season opener against the Chicago Bears. A handful of those runs were by design. Unfortunately, they weren't enough to pull out a win, with the 49ers losing 19-10. Shanahan hopes Lance's versatility becomes a significant advantage moving forward, though. He wants to keep defenses on their toes and guessing what the 49ers offense might do on any given play. Even when it seems like Lance might pass, his threat of taking off with the football can change how a defense reacts. "That's his advantage, and that's what he's got to keep," Shanahan told NBC Sports Bay Area this week. "I mean, that's what gives him an advantage in this league, when you are a threat to run, even though you

The San Francisco 49ers are playing the Seattle Seahawks at Levi's Stadium. It is the Niners' home opener. The team entered the matchup without tight end George Kittle and offensive lineman Daniel Brunskill. The former is dealing with a groin strain, while the latter is attempting to return from a hamstring injury. Both are among five inactive players for the 49ers. Below are the 49ers-Seahawks in-game injury updates. QB Trey Lance (ankle, ruled out) Jimmy Garoppolo entered the game for injured quarterback Trey Lance, who went down late in the first quarter. Lance was carted off the field after sustaining what appeared to be a lower right leg injury.

Trey Lance went down late in the first quarter of the San Francisco 49ers' 27-7 win over the Seattle Seahawks. It was an injury so concerning that the second-year quarterback couldn't make it off the field on his own. He tried to get up, but pressure on his right leg, and immediately went back down to the turf. There was a great deal of concern from his teammates for Lance as he was carted off the field and into the locker room for further tests. The 49ers later announced that Lance was ruled out due to an ankle injury. ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Lance's season may be over. The quarterback is expected to require surgery, likely ending his season. So it will probably be Jimmy Garoppolo's job moving
