Why Kyle Shanahan isn’t concerned with high number of interceptions in 49ers practices

San Francisco 49ers quarterbacks have thrown several interceptions during the early practices of training camp. Looking at it from a defensive perspective, that's good. Not so much from the offense's perspective. The team is entering the 2022 season with second-year quarterback Trey Lance under center.

Lance's head coach isn't too concerned, though. At least, not yet. He explained why before Monday's practice, the first padded session of training camp.

"It's not like I come in and I'm happy about it, but I just don't overreact to them," Kyle Shanahan told reporters. "It's part of camp. You can't block D-linemen without pads on, so I don't like them just sitting there, curling up into a fetal position, and not letting it go. I like to be able to coach stuff.

"There's been a number of tips out there and stuff. Sometimes guys don't break the route off the right way, and I like guys who don't wait to see what the wideout's going to do. I like guys who rip it based off the right decision, and then you coach from there."

While Shanahan is the offensive play-caller, he noted that, as the head coach of the entire team, he has to be happy with the defensive efforts to haul in the turnovers.

"We make a lot of dumb decisions," Shanahan continued. "And if we do make a lot of dumb decisions, you've got to change it as a coach. And if they aren't, then you learn how to call plays differently. I know there's been some picks, but it hasn't been a concern of mine so far."

One thing that could help limit the mistakes is the return of wide receiver Deebo Samuel to the practice field. The 49ers star signed his three-year contract extension today and will be eased back onto the practice field. The Monday session will be the first padded practice of training camp.

49ers insider: I would be surprised if Brandon Aiyuk isn't signed to a new deal

By David Bonilla
Apr 11

As expected, the most significant storyline surrounding the San Francisco 49ers this offseason revolves around the contract negotiations with star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. There hasn't been much official chatter on that front aside from general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan assuring reporters that every effort is being made to retain Aiyuk. That hasn't stopped the rampant speculation from the media, with reports of interest from teams like the Jacksonville Jaguars and Pittsburgh Steelers, as well as former teammate

PFF high on this cornerback for 49ers in mock draft

By David Bonilla
Apr 15

Analyst Dane Brugler of The Athletic grades former Iowa State cornerback T.J. Tampa as a second or third-round draft pick and ranks him 55th overall on his big board. Pro Football Focus, however, holds a higher opinion of the young defensive back. In his latest mock draft, the site's lead analyst, Sam Monson, has the San Francisco 49ers selecting Tampa with the No. 31 overall pick. "T.J. Tampa fits the prototype of a 49ers cornerback," Monson explains. "He has had consecutive seasons of very impressive play and allowed just 240 yards on 49 targets last season. The team doesn't necessarily need him to make an immediate impact, but they could

Brock Purdy hopes Kyle Shanahan makes addition to 49ers playbook

By David Bonilla
Apr 16

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy threw for a franchise-record 4,280 yards last season, leading the team to the Super Bowl and earning his first Pro Bowl selection. He held onto the football 39 times on the ground, rushing for 144 yards and scoring twice. This marked a significant improvement over his rookie 2022 campaign when he had 22 carries for 13 yards and a score. Purdy further displayed his athleticism during the 49ers' playoff game against the Detroit Lions last season, helping engineer a comeback victory while rushing for 48 yards on five carries. On Tuesday morning, Purdy joined the "Pat McAfee Show," acknowledging that he believes he can contribute more rushing yards if called upon. However, that decision rests with head coach Kyle Shanahan,

Why one analyst is worried for Brock Purdy if 49ers trade Brandon Aiyuk

By David Bonilla
5 hrs

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy achieved a remarkable feat in 2023, setting a single-season franchise record with 4,280 passing yards. This accomplishment is noteworthy, considering the illustrious quarterbacks who have graced the organization's history. A significant portion of those yards came from wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who amassed a career-high and team-leading 1,342 receiving yards. Most of his 75 catches originated from passes thrown by Purdy. Amidst significant offseason chatter surrounding the 49ers' star receiver, including several unsubstantiated trade rumors, Aiyuk's future remains uncertain. Former NFL player James Jones, now an analyst, expressed concern for Purdy should Aiyuk's tenure in the Bay Area come to an end. "I
