Kyle Shanahan: I’ve been real happy for Matt LaFleur, but not this week

Jan 17, 2022 at 3:40 PM--

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan and Packers head coach Matt LaFleur didn't have the warmest handshake after the Packers beat the 49ers 30-28 in Week Three, but there's no bad feelings between the coaches heading into Saturday night's divisional round game at Lambeau Field. The San Francisco 49ers play three preseason games in the span of 14 days. Head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters before Tuesday's practice and laid out his plan to ensure the starters get some exhibition reps without getting worn down. For second-year quarterback Trey Lance, that means playing in just two preseason games. "We've got a pretty good idea [for the preseason plan]," Shanahan said. "I definitely want to see how these practices go these first two days. I'd like to get guys to play in this game, mainly because I don't want them to play in the second game." On Friday, the 49ers will host the Green Bay Packers at Levi's Stadium. Then, eight days later, they will play the Minnesota Vikings on the road. San Francisco will practice with the Vikings

Kyle Shanahan: Jimmy Garoppolo working toward next situation, 49ers not limiting him

Wednesday was an interesting sight at San Francisco 49ers practice. While you might think all of the attention would be on the field with the team practicing, many fans were interested in one player who has not been practicing—Jimmy Garoppolo. The quarterback was even seen interacting with teammates and fans. That shows you what Garoppolo has meant to the 49ers and the fanbase over the years. The Garoppolo chapter is nearing an end. Second-year quarterback Trey Lance has taken over as the team's starting quarterback. San Francisco has been trying to trade Garoppolo all offseason. Of course, the veteran undergoing shoulder surgery on March 8 complicated things, ending trade talks at the time. As the 49ers await a trade situation to develop, Garoppolo remains

Some expect the San Francisco 49ers offense to evolve with second-year quarterback Trey Lance at the helm. While that is probably true, it will not be by design. There won't be a drastic change to the playbook. Instead, Lance can extend plays and potentially get the football further down the field for some explosive plays. Head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters before Saturday's practice and was asked about the playbook. Is he considering changing it to take advantage of Lance's unique athleticism? "Not really at all," Shanahan responded. "I mean, you do the same stuff, and you just got a couple of more elements. When you have the threat of a running quarterback, that can change defenses. And when you see how that changes them, then you adjust to

49ers Notebook: OL Spencer Burford looks ahead to starting; WR Ray-Ray McCloud's reflections on Kyle Shanahan; Shanahan pleased with Javon Kinlaw

The 49ers are just three days away from their preseason opener against the Green Bay Packers (8:30 p.m. ET/5:30 p.m. PT, Friday), a game that will give 49ers fans the chance to see a number of their team's players in on-field action for the first time. Two particular newcomers of interest to keep an eye on Friday night will be offensive lineman Spencer Burford and wide receiver/return specialist Ray-Ray McCloud. Burford is progressing towards starting as a rookie at right guard after being selected by the 49ers in Round 4 of the 2022 NFL Draft, while McCloud will be making his 49ers preseason debut after signing with the team as a free agent in the offseason. McCloud is expected to be the primary return specialist for the 49ers this season, but there's a chance he could also
