49ers legend Bryant Young offers this advice to Trey Lance
By David Bonilla
May 11
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance is preparing to enter his second NFL season, and likely his first as a full-time starter. He had two starts during his rookie campaign, but only because veteran Jimmy Garoppolo was injured.
49ers legend Bryant Young played on the defensive side of the football for 14 years, all with San Francisco. Young frustrated opposing quarterbacks during his illustrious career, bringing them down a team-record 89.5 times.
What advice does the soon-to-be Hall of Fame defender have for the 49ers' 22-year-old quarterback?
"He's a big kid," Young said Wednesday on KNBR's Murph & Mac show. "I got a chance to meet him at the 49ers Foundation event earlier in the year. Not only is he a big, athletic kid with a

Steve Young weighs in on the narrative that 49ers' Trey Lance isn't ready

Many have questioned Trey Lance's readiness as the second-year quarterback prepares to enter his first season as a starter. The San Francisco 49ers are transitioning from Jimmy Garoppolo to Lance, yet both remain on the roster despite the team's efforts to trade the former.
The 49ers have maintained that they are confident in their 22-year-old quarterback to step into the starting role. However, others have questioned that confidence, speculating that there may be some doubt in Lance's progress from year one. Garoppolo remaining with the team this far into the offseason has fueled much of that.
The truth is, Garoppolo probably wouldn't be on the roster had he been healthy. Instead, the quarterback is recovering from his March 8 shoulder surgery.

Last year, San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle became the first-ever recipient of the Dwight Clark Legacy Award. It's an honor presented to a 49ers player who best exemplifies the late receiver's spirit of teamwork.
According to Steve Young, this year's recipient will be defensive lineman Arik Armstead. The Hall of Fame quarterback revealed the news on Wednesday morning during KNBR's Murph & Mac show.
Of course, the guest list on the website for the June 1 event, the Dwight Clark Legacy Series, likely hinted that Armstead would be the recipient. The

Pro Football Focus (PFF) did their annual ranking of the top 25 players under 25 entering the season, compiling a list of the many young stars that have taken over football in the past few years.
With the criteria being "under 25," several players graduated from PFF's rankings last year, including 49ers' star linebacker Fred Warner, who came in as the best player under 25 on PFF's list in 2021, which was ahead of Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson, then-Tennessee Titans receiver A.J. Brown, and San Francisco's own Nick Bosa, who slotted in at two, three, and four, respectively on the list.
In their 2022 version, PFF ranked Bosa as their best player under 25 in 2022, ahead of quarterback Justin Herbert, running back Jonathan Taylor, and most notably,
