In his weekly "Offensive Players of the Week" segment, NBC Sports's Peter King included 49ers rookie Trey Lance, who made his second career start against the Houston Texans Sunday.

Lance was among some pretty good company, as King put him amongst Tom Brady and JaMarr Chase, who both had monster games Sunday to warrant their presence on the list.

Lance threw 23 passes, completing 16 of them en route to 248 yards passing, two touchdowns and an interception. He also added 31 yards on the ground with his eight carries to round out his performance.

King attributed his ranking to Lance's second half, where he took over offensively, airing it out and scoring 20 points, as opposed to Houston's 7, for a final score of 23-7.

"In winning his first NFL game, 23-7 over Houston, Lance was shaky early but led the Niners to scoring the last 23 points of the game in the final 31 minutes."

In addition, George Kittle had nothing but kind words for his rookie quarterback, pointing out the growth over the course of the game, which led to San Francisco winning this must-win game.

"I think he got better throughout the game," tight end George Kittle said of the third pick in the draft."

King noted that Lance may be important next week, depending on Jimmy Garoppolo's health, as the 49ers are currently fighting for a playoff spot.

"The Niners may need him next week at the Rams. A win next weekend or a Saints loss means the Niners would make the playoffs. There's so much riding on Lance's play as the sun sets on this season, and San Francisco would like to have a good feeling entering Lance's sophomore year."

If Lance is the one to go next week, it would be an amazing storyline for the rookie, as the 49ers are going into Los Angeles, a team fighting to clinch the division, needing a win to pave their own path into the playoffs.

"Thank God for Mr. Irrelevant": John Lynch reflects on 49ers drafting Trey Lance

By David Bonilla
Apr 22

The decision to trade up in the 2021 NFL Draft and select quarterback Trey Lance could have had significant consequences for general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan. With the team lacking first-round picks in the last two drafts due to this move, and Lance no longer on the roster after being traded to the Dallas Cowboys before last season, it's clear the gamble didn't unfold as expected. Lynch held his annual pre-draft press conference on Monday, reflecting on the decision to take such a big chance on Lance. While such a bold move might have jeopardized jobs elsewhere, Lynch and Shanahan were blessed with some good fortune in the 2022 NFL Draft. Acknowledging the support of the team's ownership, Lynch stated, "They believe in Kyle and I, and our

49ers trade up for offensive lineman in mock draft

By David Bonilla
Apr 19

The San Francisco 49ers hold the No. 31 overall pick, but speculation abounds that they may seek to move before or during the first round of next week's NFL Draft. With the offensive line as a prime target for improvement and the position going mostly ignored in free agency, a strategic trade-up to acquire an impact player could be in the cards. Alyssa Barbieri proposes such a scenario in her latest mock draft for USA Today's Touchdown Wire. Barbieri envisions the 49ers trading with the Miami Dolphins to move up 10 spots, selecting former Alabama offensive lineman JC Latham. Latham started 27 games

7-round mock draft has 49ers adding 2 legacy players

By David Bonilla
Apr 22

Trevor Sikkema of Pro Football Focus unveiled a seven-round mock draft for the San Francisco 49ers, addressing several key needs for the team in the 10-pick projection. Interestingly, the mock draft sees the team adding two legacy players. But before delving into that, let's examine the first three selections. Sikkema has the 49ers shoring up their offensive line at pick No. 31 with the selection of former Arizona offensive tackle Jordan Morgan. Morgan allowed 14 pressures and two sacks in his 477 pass-blocking snaps at left tackle in 2023. He earned an impressive pass-blocking grade of 87.3 and an overall grade of
