Mike McDaniel's crystal ball: 49ers coach predicts Jimmy Garoppolo throws the ball well in practice

San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel is not a fortune teller. However, he did peer into the crystal ball while speaking with reporters before Wednesday's practice. The 49ers are preparing to face their next playoff opponent—the Green Bay Packers—at Lambeau Field. However, their quarterback is banged up. Jimmy Garoppolo has been playing through a torn ligament and chipped bone in his right thumb. Then he suffered a right shoulder sprain during Sunday's playoff win against the Dallas Cowboys. For a right-handed quarterback, that is problematic. Garoppolo is still expected to start against the Packers. His offensive coordinator, Mike McDaniel, spoke with reporters before Wednesday's practice. What does he expect to see

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan provided status updates for a number of players after practice on Friday, including quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo—but he still stopped short of naming him the starter for this weekend's game against the Los Angeles Rams (Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ET/1:25 p.m. PT, FOX). Shanahan stuck to his stance of not announcing a starter between Garoppolo and rookie Trey Lance in order to give Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris more to think about, but he was clearly encouraged with what he saw from Garoppolo at practice throughout the week after missing last Sunday's start against the Houston Texans with a thumb injury. "He had a good week—a good week of practice when he was in there. I feel good with where he's at right now," Shanahan

The San Francisco 49ers are preparing for their Week 18 contest against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was limited for his third consecutive practice. He is working hard to start Sunday's game, despite dealing with a serious thumb injury. Garoppolo is listed as "questionable." "He had a good week," head coach Kyle Shanahan said. "Yeah, a good week of practice when he was in there. I feel good with where he is at right now." Tackle Trent Williams did not practice at all this week. He suffered an elbow injury during Week 17's win against the Houston Texans. Williams is also listed as "questionable." "No, Trent didn't practice," Shanahan said. "He's still rehabbing his

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo spoke with FOX Sports' Tom Rinaldi after a gutsy performance and a 27-24 overtime win against the division-rival Los Angeles Rams. Garoppolo completed 23-of-32 pass attempts for 316 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions, doing so with a torn ligament and chipped bone in his right thumb. "It was definitely tested," Garoppolo said of his injured thumb. "It's football. I don't know what to say. It [expletive] hurt. Sorry, but it is what it is. We got the win, and that's all that matters." It was an exciting game that fans and players will remember for a while. The 49ers won their sixth consecutive game against the Rams. "It was a special moment," Garoppolo said. "There were times on the sideline where
