Why 49ers rookie C Dohnovan West might've gone undrafted

By Rohan Chakravarthi
May 12

The San Francisco 49ers were considered by many as one of the winners of the undrafted free agent process, signing centers Dohnovan West and Jason Poe alongside a slew of potential contributors to round out their 90-man roster. West, a prospect many in the media believed would be drafted in the mid to late rounds, did not end up hearing his name called, making him one of the most sought-after undrafted free agents of the class. He quickly signed with the 49ers, who reportedly gave him $100,000 in guaranteed money with a $10,000 signing bonus. Why did West go undrafted? Speaking to the media for the first time as a 49er, West dove into the offseason

What the 49ers drafting of Ty Davis-Price might signal

For the second time in as many years, the San Francisco 49ers selected a running back in the third round of the NFL Draft. Last season it was Trey Sermon, out of Ohio State University, via the University of Oklahoma. This time it was Ty Davis-Price out of LSU. The pick left many shaking their head, especially fans who couldn't understand why the team needed to draft a running back so high when it did so a year ago. After the draft, head coach Kyle Shanahan answered that question. "We're a running team," said Shanahan. "We like to run the ball. Maybe Davis-Price is a depth piece. "I don't think

When will the San Francisco 49ers finally trade quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, officially ushering in the Trey Lance era without the distraction of the veteran still being on the roster? The team has tried, but Garoppolo opting to undergo shoulder surgery on March 8 halted all trade talks. "I felt like we were close in some [trade] discussions, and then the decision was made to have surgery," general manager John Lynch said earlier this month. "That just brought things to a screeching halt." Now, everyone is waiting for Garoppolo to be healthy again. The problem is that many quarterback-needy teams have already made offseason moves to improve the position. A couple

Bleacher Report identifies 49ers' biggest remaining need

The San Francisco 49ers did what they could to address offseason needs. They signed Charvarius Ward and drafted two cornerbacks to bolster that position. In addition, they hope to have found a replacement for Dee Ford in second-round draft pick Drake Jackson. There remains uncertainty about who will be playing alongside Jimmie Ward at safety, but the team has options. While the 49ers drafted two offensive linemen—Spencer Burford and Nick Zakelj—the interior of that line is among the team's most prominent question marks heading into the 2022 season. It will be tough to replace Laken Tomlinson, who is now with the New York Jets. Also, Tom Compton left for the Denver Broncos after just two seasons with the 49ers. No one knows what is happening with
