Fourth Quarter

FINAL ALERT: The 49ers win their Week 1 matchup against the Lions to the tune of 41-33. They enter Week 2 1-0 in a thrilling matchup after leading 38-10 at one point in the game.

Samson Ebukam and Kentavious Street combine for the pressure on Jared Goff to force a fourth-down incompletion and win the game for the 49ers.

After an incomplete to Cephus on the outside, Jared Goff finds Kalif Raymond over the middle for a 25 yard catch under deep pressure. The Lions burn their last timeout and have the ball at the SF 25 with 34 seconds remaining.

Jared Goff completes a dart to Amon-Ra St. Brown for a 20 yard pass. The Lions now are at the SF 50 with 42 seconds left.

TURNOVER ALERT: Deebo Samuel fumbles on 3rd & 12, giving the Lions one last chance to tie the game with less than a minute remaining and only one time-out.

SCORE ALERT: Jared Goff completes the pass to Quintez Cephus for a touchdown, and Cephus makes an impeccable catch for the two-point conversion as well. The 49ers now lead 41-33 with the ball after a recovered onside kick.

INJURY ALERT: 49ers CB Jason Verrett has an ACL tear, per Cam Inman. He's done for the year.

INJURY ALERT: LB Demetrius Flanagan-Fowles is now down after the play, being the fourth 49ers player down in the last few minutes. More problems for the 49ers as the Lions try and continue their improbable comeback.

On the onside kick, the ball bounces off George Kittle's face-mask and into the Lions' hands, giving Detroit the ball down 16 with less than two minutes left.

SCORE ALERT: De'Andre Swift rushes for a 1-yard touchdown after the pass interference call to put the Lions within two scores. Jared Goff completed the pass to T.J. Hockenson for the two-point conversion to make it 41-25.

After the Jason Verrett injury, Dontae Johnson, his replacement, gives up a pass-interference penalty, giving the Lions the ball at the SF 1.

QUARTER ALERT: At the 2-minute warning, the 49ers lead 41-17 against the Lions. The Lions currently have the ball at the SF 17 on 1st & 10.

INJURY ALERT: 49ers LB Azeez Al-Shair goes down with a leg injury on the very next play, although he was also able to get off on his own power quickly. Could be another case of cramps. The 3rd 49er injury to a starter in this last stretch of time.

The linebackers have been phenomenal with the checkdown game today. Azeez Al-Shair with another major hit today.

INJURY ALERT: 49ers DB Jimmie Ward is down with what looks like cramps. Another secondary injury.

Jared Goff has been extremely unwilling to throw the ball down the field today for the Lions, even with clean pockets. There have been a huge amount of checkdowns, screens, and short passes.

INJURY ALERT: Jason Verrett is down in a significant amount of pain, clutching his knee. He was able to walk off the field under his own power, but needed help to get to the locker room. This injury could be devastating for the 49ers.

SCORE ALERT: After a 12-yard tight end screen pass to George Kittle, Robbie Gould is able to convert a 52-yard field goal to extend the 49ers lead to 41-17.

INJURY ALERT: Lions CB Jeff Okudah and DE Kevin Strong are down on the field and being tended to by trainers.

SACK ALERT: Lions safety Tracy Walker gets to Jimmy Garoppolo immediately after Elijah Mitchell fails to pick up the safety blitz.

Jimmy Garoppolo takes a huge hit from Romeo Okwara, but manages to complete a tough pass from JaMycal Hasty to get a first down.

SACK ALERT: Nick Bosa gets his first sack of the NFL season on Jared Goff after just bull-rushing Penei Sewell and collapsing on a scrambling Goff to force a 4th & 15.

Third Quarter

QUARTER ALERT: At the end of the third quarter, the 49ers lead 38-17. The Lions currently have the ball at their own 15 on 2nd & 7.

The Lions stop Trey Lance on his speed-option to force a fourth down on 3rd & 1. Nick Williams was the first one in the backfield. Now, the 49ers have to punt on 4th & 2.

Deebo Samuel continues to work the middle, catching a 16-yard strike from Jimmy Garoppolo for his seventh catch of the game. He now has 176 yards.

SCORE ALERT: De'Andre Swift takes the screen pass to the house for a 43-yard touchdown, making Jimmie Ward miss and working in open space to make the game 38-17 49ers.

SCORE ALERT: Jimmy Garoppolo connects with Deebo Samuel for a 79-yard touchdown as Samuel now has 160 yards receiving to go with his first touchdown of the season.

After Trey Lance came in for one play on the previous drive, Jimmy Garoppolo remains out there to start the 49ers second drive of the half.

INJURY ALERT: RB Raheem Mostert has been ruled out with a knee injury and LB Dre Greenlaw is questionable to return with a groin injury.

SCORE ALERT: Robbie Gould misses a 52-yard kick after slipping on a practice attempt. The score remains 31-10.

Trey Lance is back in! He rushes for two yards on 3rd & 20 to set up a 52-yard field goal.

On the first play of the half, Jimmy Garoppolo releases a beautiful touch pass to George Kittle, who delivers a vicious stiff arm in route to a massive 35-yard gain.

Halftime Breakdown

The 49ers got off to a rough start, both offensively and defensively, as they allowed the Lions to march down to the SF 35 before getting a key stop on 4th down to save points.

After a costly fumble by Jimmy Garoppolo on the first play of their first drive, the 49ers caught a break once again as Austin Siebert, the Lions kicker, missed a 51-yard field goal.

After that, the 49ers were rolling, scoring on every single offensive drive, as well as getting a pick-six from Dre Greenlaw, to lead 31-10 at the half.

Looking back at the half, let's break down the positives and the negatives.

1. Positives

The 49ers offense in the first half was extremely efficient, as they averaged 9.3 yards per play, with the quarterbacks going 10/13 combined for 141 yards and a touchdown, and the running effort totaling 91 yards on 12 rushes with two touchdowns.

Starter Jimmy Garoppolo has looked extremely comfortable for the most part and led a solid two-minute drill to get points with mainly smart play at the end of the half.

The running attack has been the most valuable, as rookie Elijah Mitchell broke out for a 38-yard touchdown after Raheem Mostert was diagnosed with a knee injury early in the game.

Defensively, the 49ers have held well in coverage, as Jared Goff has only averaged 4.6 yards per attempt, despite a fairly clean pocket until the last minutes of the half.

While the pass-rush didn't have much traction early, Nick Bosa and Dee Ford got in on subsequent plays, and Dee Ford was a major factor during the Goff interception with his presence forcing the bad pass.

2. Negatives

There hasn't been too much to dislike with the 49ers effort so far today.

Still, the 49ers rush-defense has struggled a bit, with the Lions averaging 5.2 yards per carry on 17 attempts. Mainly, the run inside the gaps has been the problem, as the 49ers clearly miss Javon Kinlaw's presence in that aspect.

With Kevin Givens in at the other defensive tackle spot instead of Zach Kerr, that element looked better, but that should be the main aspect the 49ers look to improve in the second half.

More of the breakdown will come in my regular post-game breakdown. Stay tuned for the second half!

Quarter 2

QUARTER ALERT: The 49ers lead the Lions 31-10 at halftime, as the Lions boo their team off the sidelines as both teams head to the locker room.

SCORE ALERT: Robbie Gould drills a 40-yard field goal for the 49ers to give them a 31-10 lead with three seconds left in the half. The 49ers will get the ball to start the second half.

The 49ers have a two-minute drill opportunity after a 14-yard Deebo Samuel gain and a 15-yard face mask penalty on Detroit safety Will Harris. They currently lead 28-10 with 39 seconds left and one timeout.

SACK ALERT: DE Dee Ford sacks Jared Goff for a six-yard loss for his first sack since 2019. On the previous play, Nick Bosa got in the backfield to stop De'Andre Swift for a four yard loss. This duo is electric off the edge.

INJURY ALERT: TE Charlie Woerner remains down after the kickoff and is being tended to on the sidelines.

TURNOVER ALERT/SCORE ALERT: Jared Goff is intercepted by Dre Greenlaw, who returns the interception for a touchdown. Goff faced pressure on the play, forcing the errant throw. The 49ers now lead 28-10 with 1:10 left in the half. The 49ers also receive the 2nd-half kickoff.

QUARTER ALERT: At the 2-minute warning, the 49ers lead the Lions 21-10. The Lions have the ball at the SF 30 on 1st & 10.

SCORE ALERT: JaMycal Hasty rushes in for a three-yard touchdown to give the 49ers a 21-10 lead on his first rush for the game. The 49ers running committee has been dominant so far. After review, the play stands.

REDZONE ALERT: Jimmy Garoppolo finds Deebo Samuel over the middle for a 23-yard gain to the DET 13. Garoppolo has been perfect passing so far, going 6-6 for 97 yards after the first fumble.

SCORE ALERT: Lions K Austin Siebert converts on a 49-yard field goal after missing from 51 yards earlier. The Lions cut the 49ers lead to 14-10.

The 49ers are really missing DT Javon Kinlaw on the interior as a run-presence as the Lions continue to accumulate rushing yards. They're now at 89 yards.

SCORE ALERT: RB Elijah Mitchell substitutes in for Raheem Mostert and gets a 38-yard touchdown, showing his burst of speed and breaking tackles for the score. The 49ers lead 14-7. The rookies are getting involved early.

INJURY ALERT: 49ers RB Raheem Mostert is questionable to return to today's game with a knee injury. Elijah Mitchell will take over.

SCORE ALERT: The Lions even the game up 7-7 on a six-yard touchdown from Jared Goff to T.J. Hockenson with Jaquiski Tartt in coverage.

Quarter 1

QUARTER ALERT: At the end of the first quarter, the 49ers lead 7-0 after Trey Lance's first NFL TD pass. The Lions currently have the ball at the SF 10 on 1st & Goal.

The Lions have been ultra-aggressive in the first quarter. Two fourth-down attempts on 4th and 1, forgoing field goals both times. This time, it's a completion to Tyrell Williams.

SACK ALERT: DT Kentavious Street gets his first career NFL sack on Jared Goff, pushing the Lions back to the SF 50.

The Lions get a major gain from Jamaal Williams up the middle. That seems to be the Lions focus in today's matchup and it has been going very well so far.

SCORE ALERT: Trey Lance gets his FIRST NFL TD PASS to who else, but WR Trent Sherfield. The 49ers lead 7-0.

Trey Lance gets his first regular season snap: a wildcat rush for 1 yard in the redzone.

REDZONE ALERT: Jimmy Garoppolo finds George Kittle for 23 yards and the 49ers are at the DET 16.

RB Raheem Mostert earns 11-yards and 9-yards on his first two rushes of the game. The 49ers are moving into DET territory.

SCORE ALERT: Lions K Austin Seibert MISSES the 51-yard field goal. The game remains 0-0 and SF retains possession.

#49ers LB Azeez-Al Shair with an amazing tackle on De'Andre Swift screen play. Big-time play to move the Lions back to the SF 33.

The 49ers have a fumbled snap on the first play from scrimmage. The Lions retain possession on the first play of the SF drive.

After a promising Lions first drive to the SF 35, Jamaal Williams is stopped on 4th & 1(but really 2) and the 49ers take over at their 36.

Lions RB Jamaal Williams is the starter, not De'Andre Swift. Two quick firsts for the Lions to start.

DT Kentavious Street gets the start for DT Javon Kinlaw for Week 1. Arik Armstead remains on the outside.

The Lions will receive the first-half kick.

Pregame

This team is HYPED UP. It's showtime.

Fun fact: TE George Kittle is facing his fellow TE and Hawkeye today in T.J. Hockenson, whom he played with in college. This is their second career matchup against each other, with the first coming in 2018.

Nick Bosa vs Penei Sewell is going to happen. Sewell transitioned to LT after the injury to Taylor Decker with backup tackle Matt Nelson playing at RT today. The 49ers edge rushers should find ways to get pressure on the quarterback against this Detroit offensive line.

Deommodore Lenoir is expected to be the starter opposite Jason Verrett. Expect the Lions to throw his way when targeting receivers.

Elijah Mitchell is in uniform as #25 for the first time after switching his number from #49 to #25.

Sermon was the surprising one, given that he was a healthy scratch, and had been the main backup to starter Raheem Mostert throughout training camp and in the preseason. Norman is acclimating back to game speed and the move was somewhat expected when CB Dontae Johnson was brought back from the practice squad as Jalen Hurd went to IR. Moseley and Kinlaw have been injured, while Banks was an expected scratch as well.

The inactives for this week are: RB Trey Sermon, DT Javon Kinlaw, CB Josh Norman, OL Aaron Banks, and CB Emmanuel Moseley.

Week 1 has finally arrived, as the San Francisco 49ers are going to play the Detroit Lions in Detroit on the early slate of games Sunday.

Daniel Jeremiah explains why 49ers could still address pass rush in NFL Draft

By David Bonilla
Mar 21

Mock drafts will never please everyone, especially when they solely focus on the first 32 selections without offering perspective on what might come beyond the first round. Regarding the San Francisco 49ers, analyst Daniel Jeremiah's latest mock draft was no different. He projected former Penn State pass rusher Chop Robinson to join the Bay Area team. Why the skepticism from fans? The 49ers' free agency focus has been on revamping their defensive front. After allowing Arik Armstead, Chase Young, and others to depart for other organizations, the team addressed last season's inconsistent play by adding defensive ends Leonard Floyd and Yetur Gross-Matos, trading for defensive tackle Maliek
