49ers’ Kyle Shanahan wonders why people ask questions to which they already know the answers

Hey, Kyle Shanahan, are you ready to officially declare who your Week 1 starter is, even though we already know the answer to that question and have known it for a while? Can you just say it, please, so we can move it from unofficially official to officially official?

That is what Shanahan had to deal with since the start of training camp when some wanted to manufacture (in their minds) a quarterback competition between veteran Jimmy Garoppolo and rookie Trey Lance. The question was repeatedly asked, despite Shanahan saying earlier in the offseason that the plan was to have Garoppolo start with Lance sitting and learning.

The 49ers coach probably could have saved himself a lot of trouble by just declaring it again. After all, plans can change, especially in the NFL. And that is understandable. But Shanahan grew tired of being asked a question he already answered. So he just repeatedly refused to answer it.

Then Garoppolo stepped up to the podium on Wednesday and was asked how long he's known he'd be the starting quarterback.

"For a while," Garoppolo responded. "I told you guys a long time ago I had a pretty good feeling about it. I kind of joked about it. But yeah, I always kind of knew where I stood and everything, and now it's official, I guess."

That was about as official as it can get.

What did Shanahan think about his quarterback "stepping on his punchline"? He was asked that during his conversation on KNBR's Tolbert, Krueger & Brooks show this afternoon.

"I mean, I don't even know what my punchline is," Shanahan said while laughing. "I just feel like I've been completely -- I blame it all on [NBC Sports Bay Area reporter Matt] Maiocco. He asked a question that he already knew the answer to, to which I don't get why people ask questions they know the answer to."

Of course, Shanahan was saying that in jest. Maiocco is, of course, is one of the more respected team reporters. By the way, he's also the one who got Garoppolo to confess on Wednesday that he is the starting quarterback.

"But since I didn't reanswer it, I guess it's become a really big deal, and it is what it is," Shanahan added. "I don't think it's been [a question] in here, and I think we've kind of been pretty secure with where we've been at all along on it."

So now we know that it will be Garoppolo taking the field when the 49ers face the Detroit Lions on Sunday at Ford Field, even though we've known that for a while.

You can listen to the entire conversation with Shanahan below.

Rumor: Steelers believe they can acquire 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk at a bargain

By David Bonilla
Apr 17

According to Sports Illustrated contributor Noah Strackbein, who writes for "All Steelers" on the network, there's a level of confidence within the Pittsburgh Steelers organization that they can strike a deal for San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk—and at a bargain rate. "According to a team source, the Steelers and 49ers trade talks are real," Strackbein wrote. "While nothing is imminent, they 'would be surprised if it didn't happen.' But it all comes down to compensation, and Pittsburgh isn't willing to budge much on price." While it seems unlikely that the 49ers would part ways with Aiyuk for anything less than a first-round draft

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy threw for a franchise-record 4,280 yards last season, leading the team to the Super Bowl and earning his first Pro Bowl selection. He held onto the football 39 times on the ground, rushing for 144 yards and scoring twice. This marked a significant improvement over his rookie 2022 campaign when he had 22 carries for 13 yards and a score. Purdy further displayed his athleticism during the 49ers' playoff game against the Detroit Lions last season, helping engineer a comeback victory while rushing for 48 yards on five carries. On Tuesday morning, Purdy joined the "Pat McAfee Show," acknowledging that he believes he can contribute more rushing yards if called upon. However, that decision rests with head coach Kyle Shanahan,

Why one analyst is worried for Brock Purdy if 49ers trade Brandon Aiyuk

By David Bonilla
20 hrs

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy achieved a remarkable feat in 2023, setting a single-season franchise record with 4,280 passing yards. This accomplishment is noteworthy, considering the illustrious quarterbacks who have graced the organization's history. A significant portion of those yards came from wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who amassed a career-high and team-leading 1,342 receiving yards. Most of his 75 catches originated from passes thrown by Purdy. Amidst significant offseason chatter surrounding the 49ers' star receiver, including several unsubstantiated trade rumors, Aiyuk's future remains uncertain. Former NFL player James Jones, now an analyst, expressed concern for Purdy should Aiyuk's tenure in the Bay Area come to an end. "I

Why ESPN analyst hopes 49ers address O-line in the draft

By David Bonilla
Apr 9

ESPN analyst Matt Miller watches the San Francisco 49ers differently than other teams. As a 49ers fan, he feels more invested in the team's successes and failures than most analysts. With the draft nearing, Miller made it clear which direction he believes head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch should take with their first pick. In his ESPN mock draft, a seven-round doozy, the analyst had the 49ers selecting former Arizona offensive lineman Jordan Morgan. Miller recently joined the 49ers Webzone "No Huddle" podcast, sharing why he adamantly hopes the team addresses the offensive line at the end of the month. "So I
