Peter King predicts 49ers earning Wild Card berth, making it this far in playoffs

Sep 5, 2021 at 8:21 PM--

Peter King of NBC Sports released his annual playoff and Super Bowl predictions. No, he does not have the San Francisco 49ers winning Super Bowl 56. Instead, the longtime scribe has that honor belonging to another NFC West team—the Los Angeles Rams. He picks Sean McVay's squad to beat the Buffalo Bills 33-24 in a game scheduled to be played on the Rams' home field at SoFi Stadium.

That would mark the second consecutive season that the Super Bowl victor won the championship in its home stadium.

King does have the Niners among the three Wild Card teams in the NFC, though. The others are the New Orleans Saints and the Seattle Seahawks. So what does the writer predict for Kyle Shanahan's squad? He sees them beating the NFC East champion Dallas Cowboys in the Wild Card round before falling to the defending Super Bowl champion and top-seeded Tampa Bay Buccaneers the next week.

It is worth noting that King has successfully predicted at least one of the two Super Bowl participants in each of the past four years, giving hope to anyone wanting to see a 49ers-Bills Super Bowl matchup. In 2018, he predicted a Patriots-Rams Super Bowl, and that's what it ended up being.

Below are King's NFC playoff predictions for the 2021 season.

NFC Seeds
  1. Tampa Bay
  2. Green Bay
  3. L.A. Rams
  4. Dallas
  5. San Francisco*
  6. New Orleans*
  7. Seattle*

*Wild Cards

Wild Card: Green Bay over Seattle, L.A. Rams over New Orleans, San Francisco over Dallas.

Super Bowl LVI, at Los Angeles, Feb. 13, 2022: L.A. Rams 33, Buffalo 24.

Peter King explains why 49ers' Jimmy Garoppolo is an undesirable trade target

By David Bonilla
Oct 20

The trade deadline always creates speculation across the league. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo landed with the San Francisco 49ers at the trade deadline in 2017. The Niners traded for wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders about a week before the trade deadline in 2019. The 49ers have two more games before this year's trade deadline. Garoppolo is expected to be the team's starter this weekend against the Indianapolis Colts. Assuming he remains healthy, he will likely be the starter the next weekend against the Chicago Bears. Fans hoping for San Francisco to deal its veteran quarterback, officially passing the torch to rookie Trey Lance, and recouping some draft capital in the process, might be disappointed. One longtime NFL writer doesn't believe Garoppolo is going

Analyzing 49ers QB Trey Lance's rookie season so far

When the 49ers drafted Trey Lance at No. 3 overall, I thought that he was specifically for 2022, because I felt the inconsistencies with his accuracy in college just needed to be fixed, similar to Josh Allen when he came out of the draft. Well, the inevitable happened, as Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a calf strain in San Francisco's Week 4 loss to Seattle, paving the way for Lance to make his first career start. Up to now, Lance is 25-of-48 for 354 yards, with three touchdowns, and an interception through the air, while also rushing 27 times for 133 yards and a touchdown. So, where does that place Lance? Well, in the limited sample size, Lance has primarily been what was expected, and then some. Coming out of college, Lance was a player

Rapoport: Trey Lance 'cannot win' the 49ers' starting job vs. Cardinals

By David Bonilla
Oct 10

What happens if San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance shocks the NFL world with a strong performance today against the Arizona Cardinals and Jimmy Garoppolo (calf) is healthy heading into Week 7 after the bye? Nothing, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network (h/t to Alex Didion of NBC Sports). The job will reportedly still belong to Garoppolo, no matter what happens this afternoon at State Farm Stadium. "San Francisco has been very clear that, not just this week—although, they were clear this week as well, really, ever since Trey Lance was drafted No. 3 [overall] when the 49ers traded all the way

49ers-Cardinals: Jimmy Garoppolo, Jauan Jennings among 7 inactives for Niners

By David Bonilla

The San Francisco 49ers have released the list of inactive players for their Week 5 matchup on the road against the Arizona Cardinals. These players will not suit up for Sunday's game. Inactives: OL Aaron Banks QB Jimmy Garoppolo WR Jauan Jennings DL Zach Kerr DB Buster Skrine CB Ambry Thomas CB K'Waun Williams On Saturday, the 49ers promoted wide receiver Travis Benjamin from the practice squad to the active roster. The team also activated tight end Tanner Hudson and quarterback Nate Sudfeld from the practice squad. Both will revert back to the practice squad after the
