‘He’s a baller, man’: Trey Lance continues to impress for 49ers

Aug 3, 2021 at 3:20 PM--

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan maintains there is not a "competition" for the starting QB job. But backup Trey Lance is trying to change his mind. The No. 3 draft pick completed 13 of 14 passes Tuesday, took his first snap with the first-team offense, and uncorked arguably the best throw of training camp.

49ers RB Elijah Mitchell continues to impress with surprisingly productive rookie season

By Kirk Larrabee

San Francisco 49ers running back Elijah Mitchell continued the highly impressive rookie season that nobody saw coming on Sunday, rushing for 133 yards and one touchdown on 27 carries in his team's thrilling 34-26 win over the Minnesota Vikings. It was the fourth 100-yard game of the season for Mitchell, and making it more impressive is the fact he did it less than two weeks after having surgery for a fractured finger (November 16). It's the latest chapter in a performance that has made Mitchell the best rookie on the 49ers roster, which is something nobody could have predicted from the University of Louisiana product when they made him their final selection in the 2021 NFL Draft at pick 194 overall in Round 6. The selection of Mitchell was actually a bit of a

Why Kyle Shanahan didn't give Trey Lance more playing time during 49ers-Jaguars

During Sunday's victory against the Jaguars, 49ers quarterback Trey Lance got his first live snaps since his first NFL start in Week 5 against the Arizona Cardinals, although most of them were handoffs. While the game seemed out of reach for much of the fourth quarter, head coach Kyle Shanahan elected not to put his rookie into the game to gain some of that "game-time" experience that Shanahan alluded to last week. Lance trotted out for the first time in over a month during the 49ers last offensive series, in which he handed the ball off twice, rushed once, and kneeled twice to end the game. When asked about whether Shanahan had any thoughts

49ers LB Azeez Al-Shaair continues to break out with big plays in win over Vikings

Injuries can sometimes lead to opportunities in the NFL, and when those opportunities arise, it's important for the players who get their chance to make the most of it. One of the biggest examples of that this season for the San Francisco 49ers has been third-year linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair, who has been shining recently in a starting role after taking over for the injured Dre Greenlaw. Greenlaw has been injured for most of the season after suffering a groin injury against the Detroit Lions in Week 1. Al-Shaair has stepped in and been a standout at times, in particular during the 49ers' 34-26 win over the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. Al-Shaair had eight tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery in the game, which also saw Greenlaw's return from

49ers-Jaguars: Kyle Shanahan 'holding out hope' that Elijah Mitchell could play, discusses Jeff Wilson, Trey Sermon

By David Bonilla

San Francisco 49ers rookie running back Elijah Mitchell is officially listed as "doubtful" for Sunday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Head coach Kyle Shanahan is still hoping that the rookie could play, but the odds are against him. Mitchell suffered a finger fracture during Monday night's win over the Los Angeles Rams. The next day, he underwent a procedure to repair the damage. As a result, Mitchell has not practiced at all this week. The coach had hoped the team's leading rusher would get some work in during the three practices, but that never happened. "It's just how he feels with it," Shanahan explained. "And we thought it would be a little further along now. But obviously, it isn't. That's why he couldn't go today. We're holding out hope because
