Why Kyle Shanahan didn't give Trey Lance more playing time during 49ers-Jaguars

During Sunday's victory against the Jaguars, 49ers quarterback Trey Lance got his first live snaps since his first NFL start in Week 5 against the Arizona Cardinals, although most of them were handoffs. While the game seemed out of reach for much of the fourth quarter, head coach Kyle Shanahan elected not to put his rookie into the game to gain some of that "game-time" experience that Shanahan alluded to last week. Lance trotted out for the first time in over a month during the 49ers last offensive series, in which he handed the ball off twice, rushed once, and kneeled twice to end the game. When asked about whether Shanahan had any thoughts

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan says Trey Sermon is improving but 'there is a pecking order'

Trey Sermon was a third-round pick in April's draft. However, the San Francisco 49ers' sixth-round pick, Elijah Mitchell, is the team's starting running back and leading rusher. Sermon had 10 carries during Sunday's 30-10 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Before that, his last carry came in Week 5 against the Arizona Cardinals. Sermon moved up the depth chart because Mitchell was inactive due to rib and finger injuries. Kyle Shanahan insists that Sermon is showing improvement. On Monday, one day after the team's Week 11 win, the 49ers coach spoke with reporters and discussed the developing rookie running back. "I think he's better now than when he was given the last opportunity," Shanahan said of Sermon. "I know I get these questions about Trey

49ers QB Trey Lance finding ways to progress despite not getting any playing time

Rookie quarterback Trey Lance hasn't played a significant in-game role on offense for the San Francisco 49ers in nearly two months, but that doesn't necessarily mean he hasn't been picking up valuable experience since then. Lance saw some late snaps in the 49ers' 30-10 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in November, but other than that he hasn't seen any playing time since starting in place of the injured Jimmy Garoppolo against the Cardinals on October 10. Lance suffered a knee injury in that game that put him on the sidelines for a brief time, while Garoppolo came back as the starter after an October 17 bye and has held a firm grip on that role ever since. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan made it a point to give Lance some situational looks at times earlier in the

Why Kyle Shanahan believes 49ers' Brandon Aiyuk is playing 'a lot sharper'

By Rohan Chakravarthi

49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk has been on a tear recently after a slow start to the season, as three of his highest offensive outputs have come over the last four weeks. In addition, Aiyuk reeled in all seven of his targets for 85 yards and a touchdown against the Jacksonville Jaguars, leading the 49ers in all those categories. With the second-year receiver taking a step forward recently after "talking" with head coach Kyle Shanahan, the 49ers have turned their own season around, as they're winners of two straight and three of their last four games, putting them at 5-5 overall and in eighth place in the NFC playoff seeding before a highly-touted matchup with a fellow playoff contender in the Minnesota Vikings this week. In Aiyuk's resurgence, the receiver has
