Kyle Shanahan: Trey Lance did a good job of handling what we threw at him

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan had plenty of praise for Jimmy Garoppolo this week, saying the quarterback had his best spring since being traded to San Francisco. But after the team traded up to No. 3 overall, Trey Lance will be QB1 sooner or later. According to Shanahan, Lance did a fine job in his [more]

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo spoke with reporters after training camp practice today. Here is everything he had to say. Transcript provided by the San Francisco 49ers Communications staff. How's this camp been? "I've been pleased with it. It's been competitive out there. It's been good. Since I've been here, it's been probably the most competitive camp we've had offense versus defense, I think, but I'm pretty pleased with where we're at. I think there's obviously some things we've got to shore up, cadence, too many penalties. Having the refs out here has been good just to shine a light on it. But there's things for us to clean up." Trey Lance may well find himself as the starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers before the season's out, but he clearly won't be starting training camp that way based on what head coach Kyle Shanahan said Tuesday. The 49ers obviously plan on Lance eventually being the starter over incumbent Jimmy Garoppolo after trading up to select him with the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. But as of now, the job remains Garoppolo's to lose. "There's no open competition right now in terms of they're getting equal reps with the same group," Shanahan told reporters Tuesday, one day before the start of camp. "Jimmy's coming in as the one and Trey's coming in as the two." Lance

The guys you mentioned going on COVID, does that have a positive impact in the weeks ahead? As far as counting toward the vaccinated players you have on your team? "What do you mean by positive

49ers' Kyle Shanahan impressed by Trey Lance's reaction to mistakes, Jimmy Garoppolo as a mentor

Trey Lance is a rookie. He is bound to make mistakes in his first NFL training camp. The San Francisco 49ers quarterback reportedly made what is described as some questionable throws during practice on Friday. They probably won't be his last. Head coach Kyle Shanahan didn't sound too concerned about the practice miscues. There is no rush to prepare Lance to get onto the football field for a game. The 49ers have a veteran starter in Jimmy Garoppolo. Lance can make those types of mistakes because he has time to learn from them as his NFL education pushes forward. Plus, Lance has ended up being his own biggest critic and is self-motivated to perfect his play. "You don't have to get on him too much," Shanahan told reporters after Friday's practice. "When
